GA. man awarded $404,000 for libelous Internet postings

how can a woman "working" at a "store" pay 400+ K?

I suppose reading halfway through the article was too difficult, so I'll make it easier for you...

Even after the jury of five men and a woman ruled in Cooley's favor, he knows he's unlikely to collect much of the $404,000. Stookey, the lawyer, says he is now researching Ballew's assets in hopes of getting some of the money for Cooley.

This is what the ATOT armchair lawyers never want to acknowledge every time they call for multi-million dollar judgments against various individuals.

Usually I would be against this but in this case she just made stuff up out of the blue and here was her reason...

"When asked in court why she wrote those things about Cooley, Ballew answered, “I watched him and I can tell a pervert. Every time a pretty girl walked by, he would look at them. I get a feeling.”"

Damm 99% of men out there would fit that. 🙂

Ballew is the woman who wrote the posts under the pseudonyms Mouth, Calvin, Bugs, Yuck, Rebel and Slim. She admitted in court that she also had conversations with herself, posting her concerns on the site under one name and then agreeing with the posts under another persona.

professional troll

A professional troll would have been smart enough to use a proxy.

Garnish wages till you die. You can't really post patently-false things on the internet about someone any more than you could print it in a newspaper... good for the guy.

Especially if you make up shit about criminal records or sexual assaults on minors; fuck that lady. Plus the guy couldn't find work in the town because of that bullshit.

yeah pretty sure she's a wise and beautiful woman and deserves it. trying to ruin someones life by making up some crazy bullshit is not ok.

This is lulz worthy...

Stookey, the lawyer, said he and the local district attorney and a legislator were drafting a bill to make this kind of libel a crime and not just a civil matter. In the meantime, he will look for others who anonymously post false allegations.

“We’ll find them, we’ll get them,” Stookey said. “Mean and dumb is a bad combination. I will catch them and I will put them into bankruptcy.”

JFC! Yikes. Does the whole town read Topix.com, or was this girl seeding it with every conversation she had IRL?

I hope she has to forfeit half of every paycheck for the next few decades until it's paid.

This is far from hilarious, its sad and scarry. This guy loses his girl and then a near-total stranger decides to take the rest. Damn, it's scarry to think of the damage someone can do to you on the Internet and that a site will so readily give up personal information to someone (even by subpeona) that does not agree with you. In this country you can sue for anything. My guess is that this example will be re-used by others to get back at people that do not like/agree with them on the Net.

She was also going to his place of work. And you know how things spread quickly.

What the hell are you going on about? He sued based on laws against libel and are hundreds of years old. And why the hell wouldn't someone give up information under a subpoena?? You want to libel someone prepare to pay the consequences.

How the heck are "National Enquirer" and other tabloid mags able to stay in business then?

It sounds like both. She purposely visited where he worked and complained about him to get him fired. Jesus...
