Did a rebuild recently to get into a quad core and 64 bit OS. Thread about the build herehere

Mobo is GA-MA790X-UD4P
Phenom II 945 quad core

Windows 7 RC1 64 bit

Since the build my sound has been a complete crapshoot, and getting vent to work right has been a nightmare. I have a shortcut to the sound control panel on my desktop so I can change the 'Set Default' to my headset or speakers, both of which are plugged into the jacks in the back.

When I play WoW I sometimes use headset (late night with people asleep, raiding) and sometimes speakers. I've tried setting the audio to system default, I've tried setting it to my headset, and to my speakers, but the setting doesn't keep a portion of the time.

Last night I raided for 4.5 hours with no sound from the game at all no matter what I did. Kinda hurt my effectiveness.

Vent has also been a nightmare. I went from Win XP Pro 32 bit and it was always smooth, now I either can't hear or my system blasts out unintelligible crap on the channel at massive volume, which gets me told not to speak in raid (and risks my getting slotted again).

edit: I also right click and 'Run as administrator" when I launch vent.

I've done a lot of tinkering in vent settings too, from directsound, to setting vent high priority.

Help? Or I'll end up running vent on my backup computer that's still on Xp Pro, which will be inefficient but won't get me yelled at on channel.

Anyway, I didn't have to install sound drivers for ALC888 or ALC889 with Windows 7.. don't remember exactly (can't check because I'm away from home right now but will do for ya later) I guess it won't hurt to try Windows Update, or download the latest drivers from Realtek?

I was able to get some sound tonight via reboot, though it's still unreliable as hell. Made getting my first Sarth 2d kill as the MT a little hairy.

Will see what drivers are available, I assume vista 64 would be the bes driver version to get and then run compatibility for Vista SP2?

edit: If I'm looking at this right, there looks like there might be a brand new driver released at realtek

here.

realtek navigation on their site isn't the greatest, but is that a driver you'd recommend?

Also do you recommend any of the utilities avail from gigabyte?

The good news is vent is mostly sorted out via compatibility mode. Now apparently this realtek ALC889A is prone to degradation in use that requires reboots from a rough read.
