I've got about 4 hours into this today. Updating drivers, different cables, mucking around endlessly in driver options - all to no avail.

There is a S/PDIF output two pin header on the board. The cable provided with the 9800 GT is plugged in to that.

I have the latest drivers from the Nvidia site. I have tried the Realtek drivers off the CD with the motherboard, the latest off the Gigabyte site and the newest from the Realtek site.

In researching, I see references to enabling HDMI output in the driver interface, but there is none to be found. I have clicked on everything I could find.

Windows 7.

I have that motherboard, but I am using a Radeon HD4850.
For ATI cards, the catalyst drivers install ATI HDMI audio, and no need to feed with a wire.
Easy as that. I say check Nvidia website, there might be a HDMI audio driver.

Thanks! So, are you pushing audio through HDMI? If not, do you show an HDMI audio output in your Realtek driver utility?

I ask because I'm willing to get an ATI card if I can be certain it will work.

I had not activated Win7 yet, so I installed Vista just for grins and I have no HDMI audio output shown. In both the Win7 and Vista installs I had audio at first boot. No HDMI audio shown. After updating the audio drivers, still no HDMI. The same after installing the latest Nvidia drivers.

I have found an Nvidia driver for HDMI audio. It's at their website, but I found it through a link at another site. I will install it later and see what happens.

Edit: Not HDMI audio, the driver was for HD Audio. Not what I needed, but I installed it with no change.

ATI cards have a realtek codec onboard, so you don't need to connect the SPDIF from another audio source. If you install the Catalyst Suite it will install the HDMI Audio driver for your graphics card at the same time. Plug in your HDMI cable, make sure your audio output is set for your ATI graphics card's soundcard, and everything should work fine (I didn't have to mess with audio output on mine). This should work for all 4xxx and 5xxx cards (and the older R600 based cards as well).

Nvidia's new GT210, 220, 240 cards along with the GTX 260, 275, 280, 295 also have the audio codec onboard as well if you want to go that route.

EDIT: After reading your problem, you might need to set the onboard audio to output to SPDIF, which it may not do by default. I believe you can do this in the realtek audio manager.

Thanks for the great advice! Video cards are my weakness as I'm not a game player. (This computer is for someone else) I've been unusually busy lately, but I may post back with some updates. I've got a few things I want to try out with the existing card, mostly as a learning process.

Edit: I reinstalled Win7 checking for an option for HDMI audio after installing every driver sequentially. The option never appears. I went ahead and ordered an ATI card as a replacement. Tomorrow, I'll have to call and get a clarification on Newegg's return policy on the Nvidia card. It appears they may only replace it with no option to exchange. The wording says something like 'replacement with a similar card' so that's where the confusion lies. I may have to try and sell the card.

Thanks again for your advice.

An update for anyone interested.

The 5750 arrived this afternoon. I put it in and did a fresh install of Win7. Before I even installed any drivers, there was an option for HDMI audio. Installed all the most recent drivers - chipset, LAN, audio and video and the option was still there.

I hooked it up to my plasma and there was video and sound with no futzing whatsoever. I didn't even need to change the screen resolution.

Good deal. I had posted a thread earlier asking advice on audio over HDMI and had gotten advice to go with an ATI card. Did I listen? Nooooo. Should have. This was a breeze.
