Hey. I'm not much of an overclocker (building this computer for my dad), I'm wondering if I should get the Gigabyte GA-K8NS(NF3 Ultra) or MSI Neo2 Platinum (NF3 Ultra). All that I'm interested in is stability, I don't want it to be problematic (reliability), and also noise.

I heard the neo2 was noisy (NB fan) and I heard the K8NS was problematic. I'll post my specs in the reply to this thread (I have them saved on a different PC).

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Winchester)
APOLLO nVIDIA GeForce FX5200 Video Card, 128MB DDR, DVI/TV-Out.
ANTEC Performance Series II SOHO File Server Tower ATX Case w/ 400W Power Supply, "SX1040BII"
OCZ Performance Series Dual Channel Kit 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3500 - Retail
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model HDS722580VLSA80, OEM
(Plus peripherals and other stuff).

The reason I didn't opt for nforce4 was becuase it requires PCI-E and my dad isn't much of a gamer and he won't put in money for an expensive graphics card (He got the 5200 because the mobo didn't come with integrated.... and he wanted TV-out).

I hope the ram is compatible too (with one of the mobos)

Yea I *heard* the neo2's nb fan was noisy too....its a lie. Those people must be running watercooled systems with no other fans around as I can't hear it over my zalman spinning at 1300rpm :p

Lol, but the man's REALLY picky about sound. I mean REALLY. You can't hear it at all :D? I hope not. I think I'm going with msi neo2.

Hey Pentium Guy, if you're dad is really picky about sound like you say then you should avoid the nforce3 socket 939 motherboards. They all have the active cooling over the chipset. A better choice for building a quiet system is one with a Via chipset as they all use passive heatsinks to cool the northbridge.

I've got my chipset fan hooked up to a fan controller with the speed turned way down. This makes it quiet enough for me.

Also make sure you get the K8NS Ultra-939, not the K8NS-939. The Ultra comes with a much more sophisticated power system.
