I've been running a pair of WDC 160GB drives in a mirror RAID for over two years when one of the drives failed. I inserted a 500GB drive I had laying around collecting dust. The mirror rebuilt itself, and I then chose to remove the good 160GB and inset a second 500GB, which the mirror again rebuilt itself.

What I found strange is that that the resulting disk partition automatically expanded from ~160GB to ~500GB. And while I have no reason to complain, if I wanted to go back to a small size drive set I wonder what would happen.

Mind you I am running W7 Professional and the OS never complained as the drives are transparent (only sees a partition on a RAID volume). However, I wonder if the OS might complain if I later replace the aging 500GB drive set with a pair of smaller sized but faster drive set.

IIRC, a RAID array (any of them) will mirror the available space of the smallest drive.
