Well I am putting together an new system finally.
I have a GA-8IHXP board
P4 2.4 GHZ chip
and 2 -256 mb pc1066 Kingston ram
That is connected to the case.

I get 3 beeps nothing else, no video. I did try another video card and got the same 3 beeps
I think it might be the ram so i took it and re-set it and same thing.
I also switched them around, same 3 beeps.
It make 3 beeps when there is no ram in also.

Have trouble shooted it correctly and should i get new replacement ram or should i try something else?
Thanks in advance

Here are some ideas:
  • Did you plug in the square secondary power plug? The fitting's on the opposite side of the CPU socket from the main ATX plug, if you didn't find it.
  • Push down very firmly on the AGP card to make sure it's getting past both sets of contacts in the AGP slot, instead of just one set.
  • Try powering up the board with the keyboard and mouse unplugged.
  • Do you have an RPM-monitoring fan plugged into the CPU-fan header? It's the one closest to the northbridge, marked "U" in the diagram on page 16 of your manual. The board may not POST without a RPM signal from that header. Since I noticed it in the manual, I'll also mention that fans on the headers should not draw more than 0.6 amps from each header.

Hope that helps out. :)

Thank your for the reply.
I went thru and tried all the items you mentioned mechBgon.

The square secondary power plug was plugged in. (i did take it off and reseat it to make sure)

I put the AGP card back in and did it firmly.

I tried it with the keyboad and mouse unplugged and plugged in.

The fan i am using came with the Retail Intel chip and it was and is connected to the position marked as U in the diagram. The fans in the case are all working and on.

Bummer :( Maybe try running the mobo out of the case to eliminate the possibility of something grounding out on the underside...? I can't think of any other ideas myself, good luck though!

Xerus,

Do you have the ram seated in bank 0? (bank 0 is usually the 2 slots closest to the processor; consult your manual) there is a specific location the ram has to go in, because Rambus is 16 bit.
Second, do you have continuity RIMMs for your unused slots? Rambus doesnt have on board termination integrated into the mobo (except the new 32 bit ASUS) and it requires CRIMMs in those in the unused banks.

There should be a section dedicated to what the POST beeps mean, but your decription is a classic example of memory problems.

If the above is correct, I would assume its bad ram. Hopefully you know someone who has a working 533MHz FSB board that you could try your modules out on to see if they work?

Also note that you can fully attach the heatsink and fan with the cpu still being loose from the socket. I had everything plugged in but I also got a black screen, no bios , nothing. I took off the heatsink and fan (waited for it to cool off to eliminate chance of cpu damage when removing the heatsink), took the cpu out and back in firmly and re-attached the hsf. I booted up and holy crap, it worked. Also note that the board needs 3 power plugs, the atx, square secondary power plug, AND the AUX power plug.

mechBgon Thanks for the help.

4dm I hope to be able to get a hold of my friend tomorrow, he doesnt have a 533 fsb but he does have memory that will work on my board and i will try that? I wonder if the PC1066 ram i have will work on his board., just not at the level it is suppose to?

Kingdog As far as i know there are no jumpers on this board so i can change the setting, till i get the screen to boot up. But i will check that forum thanks

PhaZe i have checked my power connectors and all are accounted for.

Clear the CMOS jumper, or pull the battery and reinsert it. Mine did the same thing at 1st. I cleared the CMOS and everything worked like a champ since!
