GA-7VRX Too much ram??
I'm helping my friend build his first computer. He bought a Gigabyte 7VRX and has 2 512 MB sticks of DDR2700 (Corsair) and was having some issues loading windows XP, it finally loaded the windows 2000 disc but it still has some issues.

1st, more than half the time when he boots it locks at the bios screen and you have to reset. However, when you take out a stick of ram it runs bueatifully. Is this a faulty motherboard? Or would flashing the bios help? (They have released a revision)

2nd, When loading windows, the first 2 times we tried windows 2000 it skipped a file, claiming it couldn't load it. Then the third time the installation went without a hitch. On XP we spent 3 hours testing each component, switching everything out down to the power suppy, but we didn't touch mother board or RAM.

Could all his issues be that he just has too much RAM? How can he use this 2nd stick, he bought it, and wants to use it.

Have you tried changing any of the memory timings in BIOS? I am having trouble getting one Samsung 256MB DIMM to work in a GA-7VRX. I was getting errors running Prime95 when the memory is running at 333MHz. If I slow it down to 266 MHz, I get no errors. Try using all of the memory at 266 MHz. I think the Cosair memory is suppose to be able to run at CAS 2, but you might try running at CAS 2.5. You also might try moving the memory to different sockets. That helps with some timing issues.

If you can get all of the memory running at slower settings, 266 MHz, CAS 2.5, etc., your friend may have to decide if he really needs 1G of memory or not. If he does, he may have to settle for a little slower speed. Or try another motherboard, different memory, etc.

Yea, I was hoping to get it to run at full speed.

with 1 stick of 512 its running fine, he will be doing alot of gaming, so I don't think the full gig is going to help him, but he'd like to use what he bought.

Have you tried switching to the second BIOS to see if it helps any? I was seriously considering this board, but it seems like everybody is having BIOS problems with it.
