GA-7DXR unstable with 2 dimms of 256MB PC2100

Games and other memory intensive programs quit on me when using 512 (2*256) mb pc2100... i just added 256mb, have been using the original 256 mb for about a year and a month. I am using a stick of crucial and a stick of pny (newly bought).

Mixing different brands of DDR sticks often gives some headaches. What brand of chips does you new PNY stick have? If it got big "S" or Elixor written on them, it could be more so.


Crucial PC2100 runs well at faster memory setting than many others. Change the memory setting in the BIOS to more conservative ones and see if you can get the stability. Using AUTO setting might also work.

I had a similar problem with sticks of high quality brand name ram living together. If you check the individual mem modules on the stick, they'll have different internals and best to run matched or one stick for stability.

It gives random odd errors too until you realize that its ram. Drove me nuts troubleshooting for a month, reinstalling OS, updating drivers etc.
