Rumorville

June 29, 2007

"With the first-generation DirectX 10 line-up from both AMD and Nvidia settling in, it is that time again, time to talk about what's coming up next. And since AMD is only now getting the low- and mid-range cards out the door, this new trip to Rumorville will be focused on the Green Goblin of Santa Clara, better known as Nvidia. Previous sightings of the G92 chip have suggested that the card powered by it will be the next high-end offer, with 1 TFlop worth of performance but the latest rumors say that we're actually looking at a new chip that will be built on 65nm and that will be put on a upper mid-range card.

The info tells us that the next mid-range card will feature the G92 and will have 512 MB, a 256-bit memory interface and that it will perform better than the 8600 GTS and right under the 8800 GTS. In addition to the mid-range refresh Nvidia will be releasing a new high-end card (G90?), and all that will happen in November. Wait for it."

Next gen's midrange will perform below the current 8800 GTS?

Bleh.

Already not excited, though yes, those specs do sound a hell of a lot better.

Michael O'Hara from Nvidia said that G92 will be high end GPU. Why we should believe this new rumour?

I bet it will be called the "88/900GS". I'm sure the price/performance ratio will be there but not enough for me to ditch my 1900XT. Also, I am SOOO glad it wasnt an INQ link, thanks OP.

Note, the article is claiming G92 as a midrange and something else coming as the high end, possibly the G90. OR a dual chip solution using two G92s.

So what if my link is from May? What rumour you are updating?

I call it rumour if someone is anonymously claiming something without clear references. I don't call it rumour if Michael O'Hara, Nvidia's PR-chief, claims in his conference that G92 is high end chip. O'Hara also said that Nvidia has no plans to break that cycle where they first releas high end chip and after that middle range..

Rumour has it that there will be PCI-E2 version of GF8-cards at October. No word about will there be any other changes, but let's speculate: G80 with dieshrink (65nm) -> cheaper to manufacture -> 8800 GTS demoted to that price class where we should now have "8800GS".

Hard to know what to believe as nvidia does have a history of misdirection on future releases. That said, progress does seem to have slowed. Last midrange are generally faster than current midrange and neither seem able to really handle dx10. Perhaps this will change with better coding.
