(G92) 8800 Series Guide to Improving Thermal Efficency

Mr Fox

Senior member
This will benefit any 8800 series Owner but (G92) Owners will benifit the most as the GPU seems to run a bit cooler than the G80.

I have replaced the Thermal Interface on my GPU and it seems to be about 5-7 Deg. C Improvement just from that.

There is more opportunity for improvement also.

After getting my card apart this is what the interface material looks like, and it is an improvement from the past materials...

After cleaning the hard Grey crap off there was this GPU with a very nice mirror finish (G92) Use Isopropyl Alcohol and a Q-Tip to clean.

The cooler has been improved by the addition of pads cast into the body of the cooler over the VRAM...The Thermal tape there is .003-.005 in. in thickness

This copper insert can be an opportunity for improvement by lapping if you are so inclined.... I did not have the time

As far as Thermal materials... use non-conductive material, and be very sparing in the application. On the GPU I prefer Shin Etsu...

I did not do my Vram, as I did not have the material that I personally prefer. (AS Ceramique) the gap at the VRAM is such though that other materials could also be used as long as they are non conductive, and clean-up easy.

I did my EVGA G92 GTS today with Arctic Ceramique for everything. 750/1800/2000 w/60% fan, idle at 50C, load at 60C. Pretty solid cooler design..

Good to hear... mine does not break 60C in Crysis all maxed out 100% fan... stock settings no O/C

I'll try to see if I can get a better O/C after I get the VRAM done

Funny you mention Crysis load temps. That's the only game that breaks 60+C with my listed settings. Tops out at about 70C. I'll probably bump fan to at least 75% when I play it. GPU is doing some serious work with Crysis.

That's okay, right now I'm hooked on The Witcher. Drinking, fist fighting, gambling, and hooking up with the ladies, now this is an RPG!
