I only taped out just now?! How do they expect it to be available in large quantities 1.5 months from now?

Nvidia hopes the G71, Geforce 7900 GTX may end up even faster than R580, Radeon X1900 XTX solution but we cannot confirm that. For Nvidia's sake, we hope it will and the chip should have 32 real pipes inside.

These types of statements are exactly why Fuad annoys me (and I know the freakin guy).

Beyond3d had an interesting chart showing the % of texture and math calculations from 2001 till now in games. It appears memory bandwidth is not what is holding back GPUs in today and tomorrows game but resources to crunch numbers.

I dontthink Nvidia does if this is true. We are looking at April at the earliest IMO.

It'll probably be like the x1800 launch.. first a few, then quantity. probably won't be a real hard launch unless something magical happen.

I suppose there is no chance of this being launched by March 6, right?

That would be good enough actually, as it would allow me to get into the EVGA step-up queue for the card.

IMo this is good news. If they waited this long, it means that they wanted to ensure a competitive edge over ati. See what I mean?

"I can tell you that it is probably not realistic to expect this chip and cards based on G71 sooner than end of February. Early March could be the best bet"

I thought that this is what we knew for along time that around March 6-13 that they were suppose to come out. I heard for a while that early March was when they were coming out.

Do you guys think Nvidia would dare do a paperlaunch though after all the hype? If they continue with the more recent trend of hard launching (besides the 512MB 7800GTX) than I don't know if early March is that feasible.

There is the rumor of a bunch of GTX512's showing up between now and then.

Although if they don't price em the same or better than the XTX's, it won't matter much.

that news post makes it pretty much feel like the G71 is gonna be more of a let down then previously thought. but that was to be expected.

cmon, 700mhz? 32 pipes? thats alot. also first rumours where early febuary that it was supposed to come out, then march, now maybe april? they CAN'T do a paper launch now, else people will start losing faith in hard launches again and it'll be back to what it was.

in the end it'll be "done when its done" (gawd i hope not, especially after the last time i've heard that line :p)

Wouldn't you have thought that a 550 Core and 850 Memory on the 512MB GTX was a lot, too? Or even the transition to 24 pipes to begin with?

32 pipes isn't that much of a stretch, really.

It'll be fine guys, stop jumping to the worst case scenario conclusions. The article said it taped out in the first half of January, not today. Early March is still the most reasonable date and that's what we've figured all along.

From tape out to production takes an average of 120 days, normally. So even it would have had to of taped out Early December to make it to an early March production, let alone hit retail shelves. I don't think March 9th is going to happen if the tape out information and time is accurate. More like Early April at the earliest.

Depends if the PCBs are already in production (or done, for that matter). We're just talking core here, so they could have easily already prepared the PCBs for core placement (speculation, mind you).

I'm still looking at a March release, but not likely the first week.

Well then my step-up is going to be expired and i guess I'll have to go with an X1900XT.

I really dont understand what nvidia's problme is with G71. They've had since July to think this through and make it happen. :|

I dunno, but with an industry pretty much needing to run on a 6month production cycle due to competition for new product release, nVidia has missed this one and I would guess G71 is going to be later than March, but on the brite side G70 512mb does perform nearly on par with ATi X1900XTX, but they have lost the chance to sell anymore @$750 MSRP.

And as far as availability goes, looks like X1900XTX, XT, ect., is everywhere to be found and below MSRP, which means its nVidia's turn for a bad nightmare this time.

Why? Even if they don't sell all that money, they made plenty in the gap between June and November when ATi had nothing to offer up as competition.

They're hardly breathing heavy about this, even if ATi has a window.
