Are you sure you're just not imagining things? I don't want to say it's completely just you but I find it almost ridiculous the confrontation you seem to face during normal driving. I can count with my finger the confrontations I had during my 21 years of driving. Yet people seem to challenge you regularly in your Camry or Cobra. I find it almost laughable. I mean I see terrible drivers daily but rarely do people challenge me on the road regardless of the car I drive.

I went to Tucson once in a n/a MR2 and had several cars ride next to me chirping their BOV's. Annoying as hell...doesn't seem to happen in Phoenix though.

You should get the F out of the way then.

I rarely see BMW or most higher end cars driving as you describe. I see a lot of import and the domestic camaro/mustang crowd taking chances though.

The genesis guys are also notorious for last minute lane changes around here.

Most newer M3's I see are in teh right lane just cruising along.

Kinda agree with alky here, its usually the retards in riced out Scions/other rice bs/V6 mustang /lifted truck crowd that really gives me any problems. Most other 335/M3 owners are just cruising along

That's just it, rarely happens in the Cobra. Happens exclusively when I'm in a beater whether it's mine or someone elses. It's purely a function of disparity between what you are driving and what everyone else is driving.

When I got my first Cobra, I drove it exclusively for like 2 years, and noticed that I wasn't seeing that from other drivers anymore. I conceded maybe it was just me and my younger attitude had matured.

I started driving the Camry again for work, and wouldn't you know, nothing changed after all... same as it ever was before I got the Cobra if not worse since the Camry is yet more older more faded and more slower than the average car as the years go by.

Oh believe me I'm not picking on BMWs. If it is a BMW it's a 328i or something showing off against a Camry or something. M3/335 owners typically know they have nothing to prove. The only time I've ever had a 2004+ M3 try was failing to yield from the ending lane vs the Cobra on a merge (it was dark, probably figured lol another Mustang to beat up). I recognized the fender gills and the "bowing square" arrangement of LEDs in the tails and god that beautiful S54 sound. And that was one of those events where you can't make out the head lights anymore in your mirror, slow down, shift to 6th, start coasting, it's over... wind noise dies down and you hear something... but wait what's this... still coming up fast in your passenger mirror, he never lifted, back into 3rd ok lets do it again... same result... type of encounters. When I pulled into the left turn lane up a couple miles ahead, he continuted straight and flew by bouncing his car off the rev limiter in neutral as he passed me. I honestly couldn't tell if it was a nod to a fellow enthusiast good run type of rev or just a butthurt ego trying to get the last word in.

Another night I was in the Camry, there was this green V6 99 Mustang sitting on the red at an intersection while I made a left turn on green from the cross street.

I'm proceeding, minding my own business, taking my time accelerating up to 50 (read: being as inconspicuous as possible so as NOT to attract that kind of attention). It's late at night, nobody else on this THREE lane road. I'm about 1/8 to 1/4 mile ahead of the still stopped Mustang maintaining constant speed of 5 over in 5th gear by then just cruising when I see that light turn green in my rear view finally.

Of course he floored it until he caught up to me, passed me WOT with all the fury of a stock V6 Mustang with peeling clear coat, then lit up the brake lights and proceeded to slow down and match my speed only after he was no more than 2-3 cars ahead of me... and stayed there until my destination came up. The saddest part about the whole thing? As conspicuous and invisible as I tried to act, I still absolutely positively *knew* it was coming the moment I made my left turn and saw a lone V6 Mustang sitting at the red light with no other traffic.

Seriously? To think I go out of my way to short shift, slow down, not pass, and not be loud and obnoxious in the Cobra next to a V6 Mustang just because I don't want to unintentionally come off as *that guy* "ar ar look I'm better than you". And this is how you return the favor?

:hmm::rolleyes:

Mind you I'm never out cruising to show off or pick a fight with anyone. In the Cobra I'm usually chilling in the right lane, going slow, staying out of people's way, avoiding rock chips and pot holes and just generally not out to prove anything to anybody. I just respond when I'm tired of someone elses ignorant crap... someone has to make them pinch their little pecker in their zipper when they think they can just whip it out in public and slap anyone they want with it.

You really attract a lot of idiots, exdeath.

Not me, it's the car (stock down to the plastic 14" hub caps 95 Camry 2.2L).

My ex once drove it daily for a week straight while her 06 Avalon XLS was at the dealer for the VVTi line busting. One night she came home with a big long depressing hug out of nowhere, nearly crying and apologizing and I'm like crap what happened is everything ok? She spilled to me her revelation that it's not just my perception like she had always insisted and rode my case about, but how she experienced first hand that people really are constant jerks toward that car no matter how you drive it.

It's just people being animals and needing to bully anything smaller or weaker than them to feel good about themselves, and a 2.2L Camry is pretty much the bottom of the food chain.

It doesn't, seriously? I might have to move there then after my masters.

I would have figured bigger city, more people, more money, more cars, more asshats on the street jockeying and posturing to out do one another.

Seriously all I want is just to be able to drive a regular normal car down to the corner to pick up a gallon of milk or a pizza on a Saturday night without rolling my eyes and cussing myself out about how I should have known better to take the Cobra only 5 minutes after leaving my neighborhood.

Well, maybe that's it too (maybe people know better than to fuck with an MR2 with an open dump, or a Forester XT with a suspiciously large hood scoop) though I don't recall getting hassled when I had the n/a up here either.

This bears further experimentation - take the Camry up here sometime!

Most people don't know what a MR2 is let alone know what sounds it makes or what a open dump means. You can assume they just see a new looking shiny sleek sporty, maybe even exotic looking, car that sounds meaner than theirs, and that's all they need to know. Every animal in nature knows instinctively not to try and eat other animals that have exceedingly obvious red markings on them or which stand their ground and hiss back instead of running away at the slightest sign of provocation.

Everything in this thread can be summed up and understood by sociology and zoology.

I think there are other cues that the masses seem to pay attention to, whether they mean anything or not.

Like SS or HEMI or TURBO badges.

I think most people don't bother me in my Grand Cherokee simply because of the HEMI badge on the back.

Think it would work on a Camry? A HEMI TURBO SS Camry?

Could be worse. I see plenty of people to mess with but they don't bother with an old man's car.

I drove the rock bottom, a 1.9L 88HP Escort for 10 years, so slow the AC switch can be used as an E-brake :awe: and in Alke's defense, I also live in FL, lot's of bone heads around. One day while driving the Escort some dumb bitch kept tailgating me on a packed one lane road, now if I'm doing 65 in the passing lane I deserve it but there was just a lot of cars all going slow, her pent up frustration led her to stay 1 foot from my Escort in her Navigator for no reason until we reached a red light where I exited my car and went to her driver's side to explain that if she didn't stop I would get out my crowbar and wail on her SUV, she then stopped doing it..

I have lived in only 4 different states and am not an international traveler per the usual AT dossier, but I agree out of the 4 states I have lived in extensively that Florida goddamn holy balls sucks ass with driver competence. We have our fair share of left lane cruisers here, but the overall traffic flow is pretty miraculous when compared to the low density of the Tampa highways I used to travel. How people could drive so poorly to make you think you were in a city with twice the density always amazed me.

As far as well thought out cities in the way I use roads, Columbus, OH, and Reno, NV bitchslap Tampa, FL, the bay area in California (high density here so a bit more lenient), and the triangle in North Carolina.

This is all based on so many variables that it is hard to make an apples to apples comparison, especially considering that driving skill is all over the place and probably a large enough factor that it should be acknowledged that if everyone would drive twice as good, we could easily handle twice the traffic. (maybe a bit less in cities where people know how to drive)

I had a guy in a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-class sedan come flying up behind me and to the right last night on my commute home. I was in the process of changing lanes when I realized he was flying right up behind me in the lane I wanted to move into (I was in the left lane, he was in the middle lane on the freeway). I moved back into my lane and he backed off. No horns were honked, no metal crunched, no fingers were raised, both of us backed off and acted like adults. That's the way to handle these things. Not acting like a bunch of two year olds at the playground fighting over a plastic shovel... or a spot in a sea of cars on the road.

Come spend some time on my daily commute. Those type of badges are absolutely meaningless. Wait, they do mean something. SUCKER!!! Because you're sucking down fuel at three to four times the rate of someone in a Prius who is going the exact same speed you are. :p

Smart money around here is in fuel sipping daily drivers. That's what my next car will be.

I think about 90% of the time when someone tells a story like the OP's, it's *All In Their Head*. Some car enthusiasts think that since they're so into their car (or just driving in general) that everyone must be the same way. So now, when some random person ends up driving stupidly in their field of view, it becomes a personal offense and has to result in a duel or some other ridiculous antics. It's all the more hilarious when the story is all about who is driving what model of crappy / riced out / poseur car.

Advice for drivers who frequently get into "competitions" like this:
1. Do not take driving so personally. Lots of people are crappy drivers, especially in dense urban areas. They suck at driving and cut you off, but they're really not trying to insult you. They just don't know any better. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TEACH THEM A LESSON BY PASSING THEM AND CUTTING THEM OFF.

2. If someone near you is driving like an idiot and is going slow, wait until it is safe and get past them.

3. If someone near you is driving like and idiot and is going well over the speed limit, just slow down for a few seconds and you'll never see them again in your life.

4. If more people drove like this, I bet the insurance rates on sporty cars (like the OP's BMW) would be lower.

----

Edit: I always get a good laugh thinking about how life would be if people walked on sidewalks the same way they drove your cars. I can just imagine: "YOU F***ER! You just cut me off on the way to the elevator. I'm going to sprint in front of you, almost hit you with my briefcase, and jump into the elevator in front of YOU. P.S. you are wearing CRAPPY ASS no brand shoes and my Gucci loafers are the BOMB!"

Knavish is correct. The majority of negative presumptions and perceptions while driving exist because everyone around you lives outside of your monkeysphere. Indulge less in what the primative part of your brain is telling you. Exercise the higher cognitive functions. Think about what kind of life that bag of meat shielded by a rolling mass of metal lives before reacting.

True, before I had my Ducati I was riding my SV650 home one evening, I had rolled up to a stoplight and was waiting for it to turn green. As the light changed I started off when all of a sudden some douche in a 335i who was stopped in the left lane takes off like a bat out of hell trying to race me. I just shook my head and watched him roar off like an idiot. Honestly, I probably could have taken him if I had wanted to. With my Ducati it wouldn't even be close...he'd be dusted easily.

I guess you've explained this post:
People being high and mighty competitive dicks on the road because they have a slightly better/faster car than average is the one thing I have never been able to let go. I need to be able to respond with unconditional annihilation and return what they started 100 fold if I become the target of their smug ego.
