G4 vs P-m

Since there are some good ibook deals around i was thinking about how much faster P-m (lets say 1,6-2Ghz) is compared to a G4 PowerPC with like 1,3 or 1,4Ghz..

Any idea and sources?

Different apps. Can't really make a fair compairison. Generally the PM will be much better.

Secondly..........it's a mac. You're running an entirely different universe. I'm not mac bashing but the apps on it just dont work as well for me as window's and especially linux's

Pentium-M is quicker, especially the Dothan. There won't be any fair comparisson's that you can really find, considering what others have already said - they simply don't run the same appz. But I can guarentee you that the P-M will run better, quicker, and get better battery life. Why do you think apple is switching to Intel?? The number one reason is the P-M and its awesomeness.

Usually, G4s are compared to a pentium3-class of x86 chip.

I still agree, though.. the P4-M will crush anything a G4 has to offer. Maybe not a mobile G5... but apple's not making those

EDIT: I'd stay away from anything Apple in the PC market, until they get their head screwed back on. Wait until you (and everybody else) has a better feeling on what's going to happen.

Also - if you're looking at an iBook, performance isn't the number one factor - usually it's portability. PowerBooks are more 'performance-oriented', but cost a TON more.

The P-M and the P4-M are different things. He was comparing the P-M which isn't as fast as the P4-M, but its not supposed to be either - its made for battery life first and foremost.

Trust me on this though, the Slowest Dothan which is 1.6 Ghz will absolutely spank the fastest G4 they stuff in notebooks.

The Pentium M is far faster than the P4-M.
The P4-M is just a lower-clocked desktop P4, on a slower FSB and without HT.

I don't know of any benchmarks that compare the Pentium M to the G4, but there is a benchmark comparing the P4 and Athlon 64 against a G5, which you can find here.

A Pentium M @ 1.6 + will stomp a G4 PB @ 1.4+

There's benchmarks of Opterons and Xeons spanking G5s, but those are usually comparisions of productivity software and not general use programs like a laptop would run.
Still, a P-M can often hang with the Xeons and Opterons, so that means it probably spanks G5s too, and the G4 is slower than the G5.(though the comparisions that are usually done between Opteron/Xeon/G5 are usually in the programs that P-M is poor at)

The G5 won't make for a great mobile chip, certainly not like the specialized P-M. Of which even the G4 isn't that great of a mobile chip. Given the circumstances, a P-M would destroy the G4 not only in terms of performance, but in performance/battery consumption.

Apple usually does a pretty good job of milking battery life out of their laptops, but the G4 was never that outstanding of a chip to begin with, and its technology is definately showing its age.

IMHO the reason Apple switched to "intel" was to get at the P-M technology.

Performance wise there's not going to be any competition, pentium-m is faster. A p4-m will also be faster, but they suck for battery life and heat. On the other hand Mac laptops are very nice looking and g4's take even less power than pentium-m's I believe, and obviously you get the MacOS which is superior but lacks a lot of apps. G4 is a very old chip at this point.
