G4 Quicksilver = choppy video?

I heard the G4/G5 cpus suck with flash, and that is what youtube is. It plays choppy. Is there a solution other than buy a new computer?

Nope. Macs dont support the GPU acceleration that Flash 10.1 gives. So yeah buy a new computer. G4/G5 have been on their way out.

Is there a workaround or different player?

I find it hard to beleive apple would not add some kind of emulation, patch, or somthing to address this.

Why is it Apple's job to fix Adobe's product? Are you also saying that Office ran sluggishly on a G4 that Apple should release a patch?

There is a bit of a workaround though. You can use ClickToFlash, and then when you go to view the Youtube video, hit the gear in the upper left corner and select one of the H264 options. My 1.33 GHz PowerBook cannot do Flash at all, but I can playback an h264 .MP4 of the video no problem.

Ok I did install your recommended tool clicktoflash, but only some youtube vidoes allow for the gear. Other videos like tv series are still flash but either the gear is not present or if I click it, there is not option to use any other feature but flash. What gives?

Same with the flash content on CNN.com, just "reload using flash".

The convert to H264 is a YouTube only thing since they provide an H264 copy of most videos for the iPhone. So you will only have that option on Youtube. Clicktoflash is useful in that even minor amounts of flash can bring a PowerPC to its knees, and a lot of it is annoying. If most of your internet life revolves around watching Flash videos, then drop your PowerPC like a bad habit and get intel in there.

What version of OS X are you using? When I was using a dual 1.25 G4 on 10.3, flash wouldn't play unless the browser was in focus and nothing else was working.

In 10.4, it would start as long as it was the active tab but then I could do other things. On 10.3, if there was a youtube video playing and I clicked the desktop to activate Finder the video would stop. Perhaps a newer version of OS X would help you out a little?

It was tiger 10.4.11 with all updates. I took your advice and dumped it last night. Now for a mini!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can;t wait.

I really am starting to like the OSX, but I will never dump my PCs to goto to apple. Apple has its place, and so does PC's.
