Recently bought a house in the burbs and moving will out of downtown, this means we will need two cars.

Looking at a 2009 G37x Coupe with 25k miles.

Anyone know if any quirks or common problems with these cars?... things to look out for?

Also, I assume their snow performance with the AWD system would be similar to the IS250awd or RL I had... if for some reason these cars are worthless in the snow, it would be nice to know.

Thanks!

you're going to get subpar gas mileage because you'll want to step on the accelerator. It's a common issue with cars that have decent and above power.

Only issue I'm aware of oil consumption. Hit or miss with the consumption issue and most do not experience it.

Should be a VQ37 in that G37x. Look up common engine problems.

I know alternators tend to go early on older VQ35 engines. But that's relatively easy to fix.

I'm looking at G37's and CTS right now myself, sedans that is.

The 37, as said, gets low gas milage but I have not seen to many common problems. The older 3.5 had some timing chains issues, but have not seen that in the 3.7. Also the Water Pump cost a LOT to replace, its run by the timing chain. No common failure on the Water Pump but just a FYI in case it ever goes bad.

This car has the 2011 bumper - it was a prior salvage... bumper, fender, and hood were replaced with new parts

I don't know about the G37s, but I seem remember the G35s had an issue with transmission fluid being the wrong weight or something like that. At least, that was with the manuals. Haven't heard of anything bad about the G37s though.

My brother had a Nissan Maxima with that issue... I don't believe it exists with the G37s though

If it's a salvage a WHOLE LOT more than just those things were replaced.

EDIT: Hood appears to be off on the right side of the front edge.

That is my concern at the moment, I have a buddy running carfax/autocheck for me to make sure the guys story matches the actual dates of any problems.

In MN it needs to have 60% damage (or more) to become salvage, which exactly as you said, is more than what was stated... I'm taking it to the Infiniti dealer tonight or tomorrow to have them check it over before I make a move on it.

My first look didn't uncover anything suspect, it was very well repaired... the hood being off was a small rubber spacer/ grommet was missing on the other side, moved the grommet and the same gap issue reversed... $.50 at autozone.

I'd be worried about underlying frame damage. 60% value damage for salvage... that's pretty intense on a car like that.

Also realize that any resale value you have on this car is going to plummet because of that R title. So if you don't think it's a car you're going to keep, you're going to have work ahead of you to resell it.

Definitely run autocheck.

I was looking at G37 Sport Sedans (hard to find) early this year. One example kept popping up at a great price. Autotrader gives you a link to the Carfax which basically said something like "accident reported", no real details. Autocheck gave much more information, basically it had been in a pretty bad accident with frame damage.

That almost looks like my car that was totaled a month or so ago. I think this is newer although it doesn't have the adaptive cruise that I had in the bumper.

The reason my car was totaled was because the unibody frame got compressed after I was hit in the back. It didn't look too bad but apparently it was. The front was crumpled on the side too after I plowed into the truck in front (after getting hit from the back).

Autocheck/carfax is a waste of time, you already know it was totaled.

I would have a GOOD bodyshop give it an inspection. Also make sure infiniti will still honor the warranty.

Rebuilt cars can be fantastic deals or your worst nightmare. Be prepared for worst case - bizarro electrical problems, issues with alignment, that sort of thing.

Personally I wouldn't spend more than 10-15k on a rebuilt titled car, and ONLY at a solid 50% discount below retail.

I just want to verify the dates he is telling me with what the autocheck says.

If he lies about dates/miles, he lies about other things.

You're exactly right... its so hard for me to ignore the potential deal, but like you said, if there is anything funky, it could get ugly quick.

I've owned two prior salvage cars now,
an IS250 awd - best car I've ever owned, sold it when I ran up the miles and I currently have an 05' RSX that I scooped up (my daily runner). It was prior salvage and only had 50k miles, I've put 20k on myself and the car is still great. I bought it for $4900 and it has been worth every penny.

I have seen it the other way as well. Carfax shows a car I was looking at was totaled by the insurance company but autocheck said the car was clear with no history.

Then there are states that report next to nothing like FL.

So hard to blame carfax/autocheck/etc… when many states do not report much and some only report over a certain amount.
Always good to get a car looked at if you have never done bodywork or really know what to look for.

Autocheck has always been more thorough for me but I hear you on the lack of reporting. My understanding was that when Carfax got more deeply in bed with the dealers, they conveniently underreported data, but that might not be true.
