g3258 vs E8500

E8500 is what I have in my old pc. there is a deal at microcenter 20 mins away from me for g3258+ mobo for 99$ I was wondering if it is worth the upgrade? I am talking about IPC and gaming performances. anand bench mark section doesn't have the g3258 yet. if it performs better than g3420, than I am sold. I kinda want to upgrade my old pc a bit and give it to my nephew as a graduation gift. he is starting hs.

g3258 can run at 4.5GHz, e8500 maybe 4+ with some luck?

so the g3258 have a clock advantage once you OC both, maybe 10% or more

as a reference the g3240 at 3.2GHz is already a good advantage over the e8600 with 133Mhz more

so the g3258 with 500Mhz more let's say will have a big advantage, but, I'm not sure is the right CPU to upgrade from the e8500, specially if you keep using the same CPU for a long period.

Clock-for-clock the new Pentium should be around 50% "faster" in most tasks due to improvements in IPC (we're talking 4 generations of refinements between these two chips). So if you OC the G3258 you could easily see 75-100% improvement in CPU bound applications.

But this still may not be the best upgrade, lots of software (and even games, finally) is taking advantage of more cores and these days I have a really hard time recommending anything less than a quad unless all you want to do is basic internet/email/documents/etc.

thanks for the replies and info. I know it isn't much of an upgrade. but for a 14 year old, it is good enough. I just have the old pc lying around as a back up. if spending 100$ can make it usable for him, great! 50% is a great improvement. ocing to 4.5 ghz should be easy from the review I have seen. this should be a great pc for him to do homework, and light gaming. so, I am sold base on your replies.

At $100 for both the mobo and the CPU, I see nothing wrong with buying that now and buying a quad core later if more cores are needed.

It's a great combo, you should get it. The cpu is insanely fast. I made a thread on the combo you are talking about. I wish I could get another one but I'm afraid to drive 25 minutes just to find out they wont let me order another one from the same household.

Bought a set over the weekend and am pleasantly surprised how well it keeps up with my 4.6GHz 2500K.

edit: did some googling. I think I will stay with g3258. it seems to give my naphew more room for upgrades if he chooses to later on. can always ebay an i5 or i7 for him in a few years. 8320 is a dead socket.

I'm fairly certain Nehalem gave more than a 10% boost.

FX-8320 are remarkably strong in multi-threaded apps. They are monsters under Linux, too. Linux can feed AMD cores more efficiently than Windows can usually. Vishera is gettting a little long in the tooth now, especially considering its die size -- but it performs remarkably well. Can't beat that price from MC.

I got to the cashier and he tried the same thing for 10 mins before I finally pay for my items. prices online and in store are different. make sure you set up an account and order for in store pick up. I think that would alleviate all the pain I experienced today this was almost as bad as best buy before they change in the last couple of years.

Thats just crazy. Specially the cashier, I would be anoyed if the entire transaction there took more than 30 seconds.

I assume they get provision from upsale. Terrible thing.

Which microcenter ? I never had this issue with the one in cambridge (and prices were always the same as on line ('cept for a few minor mistakes).

the new one that just opened up recently in brooklyn nyc. prices for 212 evo cpu cooler online is 29.99, the price sticker on the box in store is 36.99. my old pc have 460 1gb in it. should be plenty for a 14 years old. if he wants max graphics, I would tell him to get a part time job

@shintai. gonna do the upgrade tomorrow night when I have time. I will post some pics of the final oc speed when I am done. I only want 4.4 to 4.5.

edit: got it to 4.4 on 1.15 volt. ran prime from morning till now, all good. that is it. bye people.
