G3258... anyone still running one? Overclocked?

I recently put together a spare parts build with a G3258 @ and GTX 1060 (bottlenecks I know). It overclocked to 4.7 GHZ @ 1.325v on air with a Z97 board. Have nothing but WoW and pre 2015 games on it. It plays WoW perfectly - nearly max settings. Kind of fun - think I will hang onto it.

You should bench something like OverWatch and WOT on it. I was sitting behind a G1820 last year and i picked it for the best WOT experience performance wise at the given dollar. I think those 2 will not be bottlenecked. Overwatch maybe but not WOT. Wot has been updated a bit so i am curious if a dual core is still functional.

Sold both of mine couple of months ago, with AMD 200GE and 2200G going for practically pennies there is no reason for G3258 anymore.

I'll never sell mine. You can pick them up for only $20 now. Not worth the trouble. I just have all the parts laying around - it was more for fun than anything serious. Still, it plays WoW BFA, LotRO and Skyrim SE just fine.

It scored 18371 on the WoT benchmark (didn't have it on the PC, just downloaded the latest version). I don't know if that's good or bad.

I'm not sure either as i haven't played in a while. I just was playing last year and had a good experience on the G1820. I did have lowered settings cause of the 650 i had paired with it. If it can do high settings and deliver close to 60fps idk. But i did hear it got kind of multi threaded in the latest engine. As far as games that did support dual cores well, WOT is one i remember being the most recent and fun.

I'm keeping one too. Though as a collectors item.

I viewed them, and still do, as cheap OC toys. Not more, not less. They did have a niche if you needed high single thread performance (emulator boxes etc.), and that was that. With everything going multi-thread, they're just not viable as general purpose CPUs anymore.

It's a fun toy, sure, but g3258 doesn't even support AES-NI, I can't even put it in pfSense box. It was a great budget CPU at the time, I used mine for mining boxes, but its time is over. You can have just as much fun playing with 200GE, my local Microcenter sells them for $40.

I used to have 4 of them (bought them all at Microcenter as a combo with motherboard for $99). I upgraded two of the systems to a 4770K and a 4590 (getting about $20 reselling the old G3258s on Ebay). They were all running at 4.2 Ghz. Two of my G3258 systems are still running, used in mid-range gaming setups - one is my daughter's main system and the other is a spare gaming PC we keep when my kids have friends over. All the systems have a decent amount of RAM (dirt cheap DDR3 on Ebay), and having to buy DDR4 is the main hindrance to upgrading. I still consider the G3258 + MSI PC-Mate Z97 motherboard an absolute bargain at $99.

Speaking of which my local Microcenter has open box 200GE for $31.96, I'll be stopping by either this Friday or Saturday, and I am really tempted to pick one up even though I have no real need for it - my AM1 5350 pfSense box reportedly should handle gigabit speeds just fine and it is being fed by a laptop power brick <20W. But boy am I tempted lol...
