I have two machines in my house,
1. G3220 with Radeon 7770
2. A10-5800k with 650Ti

If I wanted to upgrade either of these machines to play Fallout 4, and wanted to spend < $150, would I be better off
1. Upgrading a CPU in one of them
2. Upgrading a GPU in one of them

They both seem to gave similary - I'm not even sure which one the two CPU's would be the better one to target for an upgrade.

If you were upgrading a CPU, I'd upgrade the G3220.

However, I think the best performance you'd get out of this would be replacing the GPU in the A10 system with a GTX 950.

If you had a little left in your budget, adding a better heat sink to the A10 and overclocking it would be my next step.

It's hard to compare the G3220 and A10-5800K. In some cases, the Pentium will be very significantly faster, and in others, very significantly slower. I'm with Ken in that I feel the A10 will probably be the better of the two CPUs overall, but also that there's arguably nothing really worth dropping into the socket, and a secondhand i5 would trash the A10.

The 650Ti is, on average, the more powerful GPU of the two, by maybe ~10-20%? And a GTX950 will be in the range of 50% faster than the 650Ti.

EDIT: An R9 380 is faster than a 950, and is frequently sub-$150 if you deal-hunt a bit. Other cards like the 280 and GTX960 can occasionally be found in this price range as well.

Thanks guys - I'll keep an eye out in the next couple weeks for an R9 380 or a 950... those sound like good choices in my budget.

Upgrade the G3220. An i5 4460 would go over your budget a tiny bit but I wouldnt go below that if you want to play games like Fallout 4.

If he were to upgrade the Intel platform, it'd be worthwhile to swap the 650Ti into the upgraded system.

I'd buy a cheap used 7950 and OC the crap out of the 5800k personally, but buying used isn't for everyone.
