G1 or iphone 2g, which would feel faster?

Which phone would feel faster? My wife doesn't like her iphone and I'm thinking of switching her over.

I prefer Android over the iPhone but even I wouldn't choose a G1 over an iPhone.

Why not get her something kind of recent? If you're only willing to give her your sloppy seconds she'll never be happy with any phone.

Do you know of anything in the $200 range that would work? I only recently got a samsung vibrant and don't know much of the other models out there.

I assume you mean off contract? Are you on Even More Plus (monthly discount, no phone subsidies) and trying to avoid the monthly price increase?

If that's the case it'll be a lot harder. Although if you are open to signing a contract they are having BOGO on the Samsung Vibrant; you might be able to get a rain check. But again, that's on-contract only.

The MyTouch 3G is a slight improvement over the G1, but it's really just the same thing with more RAM and no keyboard. Same CPU. I'd still probably choose the MT3G over the G1 though. They're $150-$200 on eBay.

I have a G1, and I'd say the iPhone will feel quicker. Mine runs 2.2 though so it's not really fair.

Adding Froyo to the G1 makes it a lot more current, but man does it make it crawl. I couldn't deal with it, I went back to stock on mine.

Try Chromatic mod 4.5, with a class 6 Micro-SD. Enable swap. Format your SD correctly with a Unix Live CD. Enjoy Froyo on your G1

As venerable as the G1 is, its time has passed. Its time to start retiring that device. Honestly, same for the iPhone 2G.

There are plenty of much better options attained in the 200 dollar range, even off contract, that you could go for. If you're willing to go On Contract, than 200 dollars pretty much gets you any phone you want.

No joke. It's very, very laggy with FroYo, but I wanted it as a plaything to check out Android, to use with App Inventor and as a mobile WiFi hotspot like those MiFi devices, only better. It's great when I want to the 'that douche' in a coffee shop who sits for an hour and a half using his netbook on the comfy seat. :awe:

How about the Nexus One with Froyo? Is that still a decent phone? I'm thinking of getting one to use with T-Mo 3g. I'll keep my iPhone 3g (for dev/app needs), but the edge speeds are somewhat annoying.

Yea, although its getting closer to a year in age, the Nexus One still hasn't been surpassed in a lot of ways. It will run Android as fast as any other, and its the best way to get the quickest updates.

for $200 on contract, the G2 looks to be a winner, especially if a hardware keyboard is important (since you mentioned the g1)

otherwise, why not another vibrant?

also, the iphone 3g might be available for $200 but won't have 3g on tmo, which will be annoying

Why would you be limited by these two? The G1 was terrible so I guess the iPhone 2g. But its over 3 years old which is an eternity in the cell phone world. Especially when you can still get a 3GS for $100

Terrible? Perhaps with stock builds.

Rooted, cooked ROM/swap/etc...not so terrible.

The G1 really isn't terrible. It wasn't great when it was first released - Android 1.0 was a glorified beta - but once it hit 1.5/1.6 it became a pretty solid device.

Yeah wtf is with these cell phone advice threads anyway. Most of the time people don't even post where they are from. Whether you live in the US, Canada, the UK, or somewhere else IS VERY IMPORTANT. Knowing your preferred carrier is very important. Knowing whether you're buying on or off contract is very important.

It doesn't help to say "I want a phone for $200 what should I get." At least OP has his location set.
