I just got done playing with this phone for a few hours. I'm by no means a touchscreen phone type of guy. I don't like the Iphone all that much (its alright, but not great). I'm more of a blackberry type of guy. But after playing with the G1 for a few hours, this is one of the best phones I've ever seen I think.

The fact that it is open source is probably one of the coolest things about the phone. The touchscreen works really nice though and the beauty of it is you can use the phone without ever using the touchscreen if you want. Works really well. The operating system is very quick and clean too.

I'm moving this thread to the Gadgets Gear and Phones forum.

Pfft, you moved the thread Zim, and now no one is going to reply. Does anyone even know this forum exists? :(

I post here.

Also that phone is seriously ugly, and the OS reminds me of a linux distro's window manager from 2000. It's just not as polished from what I've seen. The fact that it's Open Source is about the only draw of it. It can only get better from here.

I do think the phone itself is ugly, but I haven't seen anything in the OS that makes it seem ugly or unpolished.

Lol, I also have my iPhone ad set to go. It won't be for this though. I'm waiting for the HTC Touch HD.

Not coming to the US unless you go with an importer.

Well I'm not by any means an HTC fanboi, a touchscreen fanboi or any of those other things. I wasn't excited about the phone until I saw it. It didn't look great and wasn't anything special to me. After seeing it, it blew my expectations away. The OS is simple but very functional. Quick and responsive. The web browser is the best on any phone I've used, period. Very good at rendering the pages in easy to read, easy to navigate ways. Its just very nice for web browsing. And of course there is the whole open source, which IMO is a very big deal. I'll be getting my own personal model in about 3 days and I can't wait. I've NEVER been excited about a phone before, but I am like a kid on Christmas for this thing.

The iPhone has a simple but functional interface, it's quick and responsive, has what to me seems like a good web browser, and renders pages well. It isn't open source but it does have tons of free applications available. And it isn't ugly.

I just can't get over how bad the G1 looks, it's almost as if they designed it to look deliberately cheap and outdated. I will trust the OP and other reviews that it's a joy to use, but I would never make the switch from an iPhone or attractive Nokia until the aesthetics take a big step forward.

Give it six months or so. I'm sure Samsung, Motorola and LG will make aesthetically pleasing Android phones.
