I just bought 8gb set of Ripjaws X 1866 for $100, and seems fo far 4gb is laying waste. What would you use 16gb for again? You might be better off finding 2 pair faster Ripjaws at the same price, unless of course you are looking at getting 32gb of RAM for your system.

For everyday use and gaming I doubt memory bandwith ever is an issue. I think its an absolute waste to spend more money for "faster" ram when it doesn't help anything (maybe by .5%). If the system isn't using all 16gb you can always turn 8gb into a RAM drive and have 8gb for the system. Then you can install one of your favorite games to the ram drive (most of the programs I've seen can "backup" the ram drive to disc so you can shutdown and have it reinitialize later).

Nowadays with CPU overclocking being very easy for changing multipliers I think ram speeds are becoming more of a non issue then before for most people.

As far as "what would you use it for", Windows happens to be pretty good with handling extra memory for caching, and since Vista, pre-loading things that you use a lot.
I am of the opinion that when you can get "way too much memory" for $150, you ought to just go for it, makes for a very responsive system.

I have 16 GB of Ripjaws RAM. I can use it all up easily using 3d Applications while doing special effects for videos in After Effects.

:hmm: I have no use for that much memory, yet I was strangely tempted just because.

8 gigs of DDR3 has never been that cheap. Did you use a coupon or promo code or something?

Newegg has had deals on 8gb DDR3 kits for the last several weeks/months. In March I grabbed 8gb of the Ripjaws X (8-8-8-24, 1.5v, blue heat spreaders) for $84.99 shipped. Just have to be looking at the right time I guess. In fact, you can grab that same kit for $89.99 shipped right now with promo code EMCKFHH34, ends 4/28.

I bought two 2x4gb kits at a total of $200 ($100 per kit) just this last Christmas.

I think I originally thought he was talking about getting the exact same kit for $100 (meaning 16 Gb). And then when I came back to the thread I actually wrote 8 Gigs. Am I making sense to anyone but myself, lol? Didn't think so.
