G.Skill HK misadvertised?

The customer reviews indicate that the system automatically detects at 5-5-5-15, but some (not all) customers can then manually change to 4-4-4-12

Here's the curve ball. At least several times, the mfg (G.Skill) has noted that the memory should be set to 5-5-5-15.

And there's this:

"Other Thoughts: Before installation, I called G.Skill to ask for any build tips. Good thing!
They insisted I run at CL5-5-5-15 1.9v....period! (The default is 1.85) *Your mileage may vary."

I don't know what to make of this. I was going to buy this over the Mushkin because the Mushkin is 5-4-4-12. Now the Mushkin is looking better and better

the default is actually 1.8volts, unless your mobo is odd.
Of course some users can overclock (tighten timing) some modules, its a miss and hit kind of thing. has nothing to do with company really.

I have some G-Skill memory that is advertised as 4-4-4-12@1.9v but on auto mode, it runs at 5-5-5-15@1.8v. EPP settings are 4-4-4-12 for me, but my board only sees the JEDEC specs vs. EPP so I have to manually set them. Otherwise, they work just fine.

Why advertise one thing and then tell your customers on a public forum a completely different thing?? I don't get it. Its one thing to say that 5-5-5-15 is the default. I understand that. Its another thing to tell customers that they should only be running it at 5-5-5-15. If it can be run at 4-4-4-12, why suggest something completely different?

"Manufacturer Response:.
Dear customer

For this model of memory, you need to manually set to CL5-5-5-15 and voltage to 1.9v

thank you
GSKILL SUPPORT"

Now, I am having buyers remorse because I took the plunge on the Mushkin memory.

Click specifications tab.

Specifications read:
Timing 4-4-4-12
Voltage 1.8V - 1.9V

talta's point (I think) is that newegg's spec listing is not the same as Gskill having an ad or official spec statement.

Newegg could print the specs are "3-3-3-9" and it still would not change what the manufacturer actually specs them at.

If newegg has an error in their website's spec tables for the product then you need to take that up with Newegg, it's not gskill's job to make sure their ram operates to newegg's specs or to make sure newegg isn't make false spec statements on their website.

so you are saying that when you called gskill, and asked about the 6400CL4 ram, they told you to use 5-5-5-15 timing? that is quite odd.

That was someone else that I quoted from the newegg customer reviews. I haven't had any contact with G.Skill. I decided not to go with the memory.

so some guy said that he called gskill, asking about this EXACT MODEL by the serial number (and not a similarly named model that is not guaranteed CL4 timing) and the specific phone support person told him he must run it in JEDEC standard instead of what that specific model advertises, which he then posted on a newegg review, and this is all assuming that the tech was following correct procedure, and that the model number was identified correctly, and that it is not an employee for a competitor or just some bitter annoying guy, at which point you found his newegg review... and based on all that... you conclude that gskill is "misadvertising" their products?

I don't think that's the case...he was wondering why basically.

It's likely a misunderstanding between the user & G.Skill, as really, we all know newegg reviews have questionable accuracy.

OP has gotten himself Mushkin on the way anyway 😉

this model is CL4 not CL5. probably one of our tech support rep replied with wrong spec. we will ask newegg to remove or fix this reply. sorry about this problem

there you go, gskill OFFICIALLY says there was either a misunderstanding about the model number, or the guy on the phone made an honest mistake. and that this module supports CL4 like advertised.
