Heya folks, I'm building a new gaming system and I wasn't sure which RAM to get. I'm using a DFI Ultra-D and Opteron 148 CABNE, and I don't want my RAM to be the bottleneck of my OC performance.

After looking at both the G.Skill Extreme 2Gb Kit and the Crucial Ballistix 2Gb Kit, the only difference I could see between the two was $50.

Of course I know the reputation of Ballistix, but I would like to know how the G.Skill performs comparitively. The extra $50 could go towards a better video card if the G.Skill is somewhat similar.

Crucial and the G.Skill use different chips. The Ballistix use Micron while the G.Skill's I believe use Infineon CE-6. How high do you think you'll overclock?

The Ballistix have the highest oc's of any 1gb sticks. Check the 2x1GB database at xtremesystems, the top ten are all Ballistix's. They can also go as tight as 2-2-2-5 1T @ 200mhz. However, if you don't think you'll overclock that high, the G.Skills are great too.

I'm also hearing great things about the OCZ Platinum PC4000 Ram, even though it's hard to find. Here was a link to a review about OC'ing the ram.

I currently had 4 stix of 512mb corsair xl pro ram and I'm going to buy 2x1gb stix. But I can't decide between the Ballistix, G-Skill, or OCZ. I'm hearing everyone say the ballistix are the way to go though, hard to go wrong with something I don't hear anything negative about.

Then again I just read about Corsair's new PC3500LL 1gb ram, which run CAS2 1T. Since they're brand new I haven't seen much about them yet.

the ballistix is certainly king right now. you'll need to put active cooling on em tho, if you plan on overclocking. they are the only 1GB sticks that can do DDR400 2-2-2 as well as have a shot at doing DDR600 depending on your mem controller.

Heckler: I was going to go with the 2 gig OCZ EB 4000, but they have been OOS everywhere and now that they will soon be back in stock, the places that will have them are raising their prices almost daily. So, I think I'll forgo those and pick up the Crucial Ballistix DDR 500 2 gig kit. You mention active cooling -- what solution would you recommend for these? I have taken a look around, and there are so many possibilities, that I can't decide what makes the most sense. Any advice?

How about the G.SKill 1gb PC3200 kit? Is it as good as the PC4000 stuff? Does it use TCCD also? Cuz its only $150 at newegg.

any 80mm over them should do.
