No, the height of stupidity would be taking the bait and shooting when all it could accomplish was taking human lives and raising the threat of retalliation against Americans.

Accidents are bound to happen and it would be best for everyone if we all just kept our distance.

Pulling the trigger would NOT be an "accident." Without an imminent threat to anyone, it would be an intentional act of murder.

Put your e-penis back in your pants until you're willing to put your own body on the line to satisfy your blood lust. Then, keep it there until you get enough brain power to understand the operator's manual.

In the short term, no. But then they would've blinked and realized not to fuck with us. Besides, in Russia, human life isn't worth much so they won't shed any tears over loss soldiers (look at Chechnya).

Are you like 10 years old? You realize that they presented little, if ANY threat to us right? As yllus said, we could have blown them out of the sky from miles away if we wanted to. And if we did so, that would be an act of aggression that could easily turn to war. Bush's bad foreign policy wouldn't even compare to the clusterfuck this would become.

Would you say the same thing if they had a lock on one of our fighters? They need this badly.

you really must lay off the video games and grow up. It's a frickin bomber, how is it going to "lock on one of our fighters"?!?!? And what exactly do they need badly? They need to intimidate us? With that flying hunk of metal? Seriously?

Hell Yeah. F**K YEAH AMERICA! Just what we all need now is Bush and Putin wanking each other over invasions of airspace and bombers taken out. Russia grandstands and since the US knows these planes were no threat at all, it grandstands back by taking them out. After the lack of satisfaction of Afghanistan and Iraq, by God I think we need to get in a real war with a real adversary. Although Russia has been doing this kind of thing for decades, I think the time is NOW to teach them a lesson they will not soon forget. Perhaps if we can get some stellar leadership (Shout-out to Bush, luv ya) it could even escalatate into a nuclear war. That would teach them a lesson, by God.

And he's YOUR President. I was smart enough not to vote for him, and I don't accept brain dead murderers, traitors and torturers like George W. Bush as MY President.

You know what I think. I think it went like this:

Russian Pilot 1: Sergi, this plane is a piece of sh*t, I don't think we'll make it home.
Russian Pilot 2: Yes, it's older than my father. I want to see my kids and don't think we will either.
Russian Pilot 1: Look, Alaska isn't far away, let's invade some airspace so that we'll get an escort home and then when this ball of rusty crap crashes they can relay our location back to HQ.
Russian Pilot 2: Damn good idea, let's do it!

Wrong Harvey, the Russians are putting our pilots and theirs in harms way, not I. How do you propose we make them stop? What are you going to say if one of our pilots dies in one of these little escapades? Oh well tough shit, that's a consequence of turning the other cheek?

Wow. Such ignorance (and assumption, but we'll leave that for later), but I'll play your childish games with you: who, pray tell, is "your President"?

I'm not going to derail this thread any further by playing your lame ass game. If you want to pimp for your Traitor In Chief, do it in another thread.

As I stated before, the Russians sure didn't give a fuck about shooting down passenger planes with 250+ civilians on board when they thought we were provoking them, in fact they did it twice.

"The Soviet Union stated that the aircraft had entered Soviet airspace as a deliberate provocation by the United States, the purpose being to test its military response capabilities, repeating the provocation of Korean Air Flight 902, also shot down by Soviet aircraft over the Kola Peninsula in 1978."

So they're due for a little payback, tough titties.

Shouldn't we be avoiding military escalations with the only other country in the world that can match our nuclear firepower?

Our military doesn't need more bad press.

Ok, li'l buddy. Just keep up the hit 'n' runs.

Just remember - *you* derailed this thread with your initial assinine comment. "Lame ass", indeed.

So now you're making hypotheticals based around the Russians doing a bunch of aggressive things and directly threatening our personnel. None of which they did.

I feel like the whole "blow em out of the sky!!!" crowd play a few too many video games. As in the previous thread about this, to destroy their aircraft and kill their pilots over things like this would be the height of stupidity.

No the height of stupidity of to be purposefully putting their pilots and aircraft in positions that could be misinterpreted. If we were to shoot one of these down, I would only hope that we could find something very old like an F-86 Sabre or something and gunzo them down, just to remind the Russians how much their gear sucks and that we won the Cold War, they should really get over it.

I didn't say that what the Russians were doing was smart, I just said that to shoot them down would be really really really dumb.

I remember saying this back in the Nimitz thread. Thank god you crazy people aren't in charge of anything. I never thought I would say this, but apparently Bush is smarter then some people on foreign policy. Even HE knows that doing that is a bad idea.

Yes, best way to get payback on something that happened 30 years ago is to start shooting a bunch of people.

Ever read about Iran Air Flight 655?
Iran Air Flight 655
Yea, that was us. 290 people were on board.

Meanwhile, the Russians shot down 2 planes, KAL 007 and KAL 902.
KAL 007
KAL 902

Flight 902 made an emergency landing and had 2 fatalities. Flight 007 lost 269 people. So we've actually killed more people by shooting down airliners, but its the Russians who deserve this.
Oh, and we handed out medals to the people that shot down IAL 655.

Why would anyone try to stop them? This has -as has already been pointed out by others in this thread- been going on for 50 years now. I am quite sure the US is doing exactly the same thing to Russia.
Back when the baltic states was a part of the Soviet Union NATO+allies actually"mapped out" the position of all the Soviet radar installations by sending fighters (often Swedish aircraft, since Sweden was officially neutral) over the baltic see towards the border. At some point the Soviet coastal defence had to turn on their radars in order to track the aircraft mening it was easy to pinpoint their location.
This went for for decates and wasn't even a secret. It was just normal SIGINT.
It was usually tolerated because the Red Army was doing exactly the same thing and no one wanted these "incidents" to escalate (although pilots were shot down and killed).

This was possibly just the same thing. The Bears might have been sent towards the US to provoke a response which would presumably give the russians some valuable information. This would then just be normal information gathering.

Agreed. Its an archaic plane on its last leg. No REAL threat. If they wanted to show force or in any way harm the U.S. I'm sure they have those new fangled jets they could use.

Unless the Russians start dropping bombs or stating that they're going to start dropping bombs, why the heck does this matter? They're probing our response capability, so what? They pose no threat to us beyond their nuclear arsenal so all attention should be paid to avoiding instigating some sort of nuclear exchange. You war mongers need to find yourself a good Muslim extremist camp to join or something. Then you can have whatever bloody conflict you care to participate in.

having your life put on the line by the president is all part of the paycheck when one is in the military. if you are not willing to make that sacrifice you have no business joining any of the armed forces.
