Just because that c**ksucker Putin is flushed with petrodollars, he thinks he can keep doing this shit without retribution? It's almost as if they have a death wish. Next time, we should just send a missile their away and call it a "mistake".

U.S. jets escort Russian bombers off Alaska coast

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two U.S. Air Force F-15s escorted two Russian Bear long-range bombers out of an air exclusion zone off the coast of Alaska, U.S. military officials said Wednesday.

U.S. radar picked up the Russian turbo-prop Tupolev-95 planes about 500 miles off the Alaska coast.

The U.S. fighters from Elmendorf Air Force Base were dispatched to meet the bombers and escorted them out of the area without incident, the officials said.

The United States maintains the air exclusion zone off the coast of Alaska, barring unidentified aircraft or aircraft that don't file flight plans inside that area.

The last case of Russian aircraft approaching the U.S. coastline or ships in the Pacific was in February.

Then, four Bear bombers flew near the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, with one of them flying about 2,000 feet from the Nimitz's deck.

Russia's Defense Ministry said at the time there was no violation of flight regulations during the incident. A ministry official described the flights as standard operating procedure for air force training.

Meanwhile, U.S. military officials say the incidents are not a concern. They say it's the Russian military flexing its ability and presence.

if we didn't escort them out of the air exclusion zone, we woulda shot them down when they flew over Alaska. We're doing it for their own safety.

In the short term, no. But then they would've blinked and realized not to fuck with us. Besides, in Russia, human life isn't worth much so they won't shed any tears over loss soldiers (look at Chechnya).

2000 feet is INSANE. That is worth getting shot down.

this sounds like an occasion to sit down, hold hands, and have a sharing circle with Putin.

Oh, let the big babies do their grandstanding for the home crowd. It's not like the Bear bomber wouldn't be blasted out the sky from miles away if the commander of that carrier was in a bad mood that day.

Good thinking. Let's blow away more human beings to satisfy your blood lust, instead of dealing with it in an intelligent, reasonable way. Your Traitor In Chief would be proud.

You do realize we do the same thing right? We've been doing crap like this since the start of the Cold War.

The First Chechen War is similar in regards to the Iraq war as far as casualty figures, if we give it another year or so. The Second Chechen War was a bit more gruesome, but if we apply the argument of some here that the few thousand dead in Iraq is 'relatively little,' then I don't think we can be belittling the Russians for not valuing human life.

And this attitude of yours is laughable. The fact that this did not turn into a violent incident with one of the world's most powerful armed forces is a bad thing? Right.

I sorta of agree with Dari on this one.

These are intentional acts meant to provoke a response, I say we give them one.

exactly. It's probably more like the Naval commander just wanted an up close view of a Soviet Bear. "Hey fellas, wanna see a cool piece of ancient history up close?"

I personally find the fact that the Russians are trying to intimidate using the Bear hilarious.

Basically everything in the USAF inventory could shoot them down without breaking a sweat. They might as well rent some Cessna's instead to fly over here, it would be easier on the gas bill.

Are you like 10 years old? You realize that they presented little, if ANY threat to us right? As yllus said, we could have blown them out of the sky from miles away if we wanted to. And if we did so, that would be an act of aggression that could easily turn to war. Bush's bad foreign policy wouldn't even compare to the clusterfuck this would become.

they are not acts of aggression, its a game both sides have played since the 50's. The Russians know we are not going to shoot their planes as long as they obey the fighter interceptors and turn around.

frankly im surprised that Ivan still has workable Bear Bombers.

I about as "America, fuck yeah" as the next guy, but this sort of thing is common , and has been for some time. I'm sure we do that shit to the Russians all the time, probably to remind them how much better our shit is than the rusted out crop dusters they fly.

Would you say the same thing if they had a lock on one of our fighters? They need this badly.

Well I think shooting one down would put a stop to this in short order. The Russians weren't that trigger shy when they downed that Korean 747 or whatever it was.

Also, I'm not really convinced that we are actively buzzing their "navy" or military installations at the present time.

This is a just to kick mud in our eye as the old Evil Empire crowd is running the show.

So now you're making hypotheticals based around the Russians doing a bunch of aggressive things and directly threatening our personnel. None of which they did.

I feel like the whole "blow em out of the sky!!!" crowd play a few too many video games. As in the previous thread about this, to destroy their aircraft and kill their pilots over things like this would be the height of stupidity.

No the height of stupidity of to be purposefully putting their pilots and aircraft in positions that could be misinterpreted. History has shown that playing games like this can have serious consequences, like when that Chinese pilot died while trying to intimidate one of our planes in international waters which resulted in a collision....about 10 years ago or so.

Accidents are bound to happen and it would be best for everyone if we all just kept our distance.

If we were to shoot one of these down, I would only hope that we could find something very old like an F-86 Sabre or something and gunzo them down, just to remind the Russians how much their gear sucks and that we won the Cold War, they should really get over it.

Have you enlisted in the AF to give ol' Ivan his due, or are you going to cower and talk tough?

Yeah, but given the current state of things it would prolly be sent via Fed Ex and we'd have to beg them to send it back. ;)
