Nvidia is about to release its quarterly report later today and Wall Street doesn’t appear to be very optimistic. Analysts estimate Nvidia’s EPS will dip to $0.20, down 39 percent year-on-year. Revenues are also expected to fall 12.6 percent to $1.05 billion, down from $1.2 billion a year ago. Although Nvidia has a habit of beating estimates, even if it does it won’t be enough. Revenue has been going up for three quarters and now it will be in the red. The stock price has been virtually flat since June, gaining just one percent since August.
However, Nvidia is making some interesting moves in what can only be described as damage control. Earlier this week Nvidia and Amazon announced the availability of GRID 3D acceleration. Yesterday Currys and PC World started taking preorders for the Advent Vega Tegra Note 7 and today the company is launching the GTX 780 Ti, effectively its new flagship graphics card.

Sadly Nvidia and AMD are both doomed, specially Nvidia, as intel gets more and more into HPC market. AMD at least has its low end APUs to survive, and consoles. Ofc they still have the professional market (quadros and firepros).
Maybe if TSMC/GF/whatever fab gets better, they may have a chance.

I see the word Fudzilla and I don't really care what they have to say about NVIDIA as a corporation. Whether or not revenue goes up isn't as important as whether or not the company is profitable. Which they are. Also, I don't own their stock, so I could care less than their stock is flat. I only care about when their products release and their software (like Shadowplay). NVIDIA isn't struggling as a company, to the contrary they are doing very well....analysts are always pessimists in the financial world. We don't care :p

You are speaking from a laymans perspective, not from an investors perspective.

Companies are based on their future results. If they are making losses now, investors wouldn't care if they were expected to make profits in the future.
If they were making profits now, investors wouldn't care if they were expected to make losses in the future.

Your view is as irrelevant to an investor as theirs is to you.

I don't see how nVidia can continue to stay at the size it is today. The Tegra is up against a very competitive market, one that nVidia simply isn't big enough to compete properly in. Investors would hate it, but turning more towards compute and gaming would probably be more sustainable though I don't see those markets growing much from nVidia's perspective. Its too bad nVidia can't be happy doing what they are great at, investors demand new markets and increasing revenues/profits year over year.

I just imagine analysts as a stuck up British millionaire twiddling their mustache and drinking tea.

"How do you propose we make a million today hmm?"

Only 1.05 Billion in revenue. Sounds like bankruptcy is imminent.

I don't care about financials but I cringe when people don't interpret results properly. Revenue means nothing. Well, it means something, but most airlines have more revenue than THAT and still have quarterly losses with no profits in sight.

To gauge profit the only figure you want to look at is net income. Net income is profit. And then you can compare Q3 2013 net income to Q3 2012 net income. or Quarterly figures. Again, this is the only figure you want to care about if you want to gauge profitability. That figure is down 40% or so YOY, but it's due to Tegra 4. NV remains upbeat about T5 and have some new products coming, but mobile is an extremely difficult area to compete in.

Again. NET INCOME. net. income. NOT REVENUE. And yes, you're right, financially they're doing okay but a lot worse than they were last year. And yes, they're doing much better than AMD. But their YOY figures are unspectacular and down 40% from 2012 mainly due to Tegra 4. We'll see how Tegra 5 does in any case, qualcomm is a SOB to compete against, basically. This is basically what the FUD article is referring to in terms being downbeat about nvidia - they're down 40% from Q3 2012 in terms of profit. Well, it's not surprising - when qualcomm has a patent portfolio that makes it nigh impossible to compete, that happens. I think the situation may change next year as many other players will have integration closer to the level that qualcomm provides.....

Yes, I am well aware of how things work in the business world. I'm not privy to their financials, and I imagine even though profits may be down compared to last year or in times past, they are still doing fine as a company overall.

AMD's share price is quite pathetic for sure, not going to even begin to speculate why I gave up trying to understand the markets long ago. But one thing I do like about AMD is their share price tends to yo-yo a lot, it will peak around $4 then the sell off begins and it drops to around $3, sometimes much lower. Rinse repeat makes for opportunity.

On Nvidia, I've heard doom and gloom about them for who knows how long, and they're still doing just fine.
