My son was making kool-aid. "Dad, how many quarts in a gallon?"
I've noticed a lot of people don't know this...

A quart is a quarter of a gallon.

Thank you's from the people who didn't know this aren't necessary...
And, of the people who reply "I knew that; everyone knows that," I think it's safe to assume about 80% of you did. The other 20% didn't know.

Oh, and before you ask:
Lemon-lime kool-aid. Mmmmmmmm.

I did not know that. I have to use google to convert measurements. I only know ounces in cups.

The only Kool-Aid I like less than lemon-lime is black cherry. The rest are good, especially tropical. I miss Purplesaurus Rex, though.

A quart is also pretty close to a liter (1 quart = 0.95 liters) for those times when you need to do unit conversions in your head.

This is a problem with the new approach to teaching. When I was a kid you can better believe we all knew those kinds of things at a very young age....because we were ACTUALLY taught them we were EXPECTED to know them. That's right, thank a teacher. No offense. I know you are a teacher but todays public school system is abysmal at best.

The problem is I actually almost remember this (big into horse racing)

Furlongs came from a a furrow I believe (length of a plow field).

ahhh, screw it. I have no idea what I'm talking about and really can't remember.

Oddly enough the only Kool-aid flavors I *do* like are Black Cherry and Lemon Lime. Pink Lemonade is OK, too.

Probably. But if you know a few terms, our system is very easy to increase/decrease recipe sizes (no fractions, no decimal points). There was a reason it developed that way.

2 tablespoons = 1 oz.
2 cups = 1 pint.
2 pints = 1 quart.
4 quarts = 1 gallon.
4 cups = 1 quart.
16 cups = 1 gallon.
16 tablespoons = 1 cup.
16 oz = 1 pint.

Just about everything is in multiples of 2 or 4 (or 4*4 = 16). Thus, our measurements are binary. With binary measurements it is easy to cut something by half. To double or quadrouple something is also a piece of cake. No calculations are ever needed - just change the unit labels one or two notches. The one real problem is that they didn't come up with good memerable names for each of these binary levels.

I'm not saying that our system is better. But binary math has its uses (cooking, computers). Decimal math also has its uses (metric system).

Why do people seem not to know this?
Because the english measurement system is a confusing pain in the ass wreck which should have been replaced by the metric system decades ago.
