I completely forgot to post this was coming but such is my life these days. It's here now however and here is what it brings:

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) will receive its next system software update shortly – v. 3.15. This is an optional update, and it enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
Here’s a quick primer on how the Data Transfer Utility works (UPDATED).
Data Transfer Utility

 1. Connect both PS3 (A) and PS3 (B) to the TV. (Please note, do not unplug any cables when the PS3 power is on.) Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on and connect them with a LAN cable; Please note, firmware (v3.15) must be installed on both systems.
 2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings category and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility]
 3. Follow the instructions on-screen and transfer data
 4. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen
 5. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system.
More details on Data Transfer Utility will be available here once the firmware update is live.
“minis”
The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay sessions. Now PS3 owners will be able to play “minis,” and those who own both a PS3 and PSP system will be able to play on either platform. “minis” for the PS3 system will be available for download on PlayStation Store in the coming weeks. If you’ve purchased any “minis” already for your PSP and the title becomes available for PS3, you’ll simply need to download the title to your PS3.

Another week, another PS3 update? :p

Can't they just hold off on these useless releases until the next major patch? Seriously? "Minis"? :\

You don't have to update. It is optional. All it is adding is the Data Transfer Utility and the ability to play PSP Minis on the PS3. If you don't care about either, don't download and install the update.

ah ok so this one isn't necessary to get onto PSN, which is good, because it sounds like it will only be for a very select few.

I actually like the Minis support. Hopefully this is a prelude to full-on PSP support, which would be completely amazing.

Considering their move to all digital downloads with the PSPgo, that would make sense.

I really hope so too. The PSP has some really good games but I'll never buy one just to play those games.

The only mini I have is Tetris. I just updated to 3.15 this afternoon, but I haven't looked on PSN to see if there is a PS3 version of it.

I doubt they will allow PSP support... at least not while the PSP is still selling.
Let me read this back to you with one change:

Yet, somehow, the PS3 had PS2 emulation support for a good while. No, given the insane piracy rates on the PSP, Sony probably cares more about selling software than hardware at this point.

Well, that's different. That was backward compatibility. Sony started it by including it in the PS2 and they continued it in the PS3. Then they pulled it because it was too expensive or something.

I don't think Sony really has any issues to reimplement PS2 support via software emulation one day. That said, the PSP represents an entirely different market. If they can get someone to buy a PSP just to play one game (Gran Turismo or the upcoming MGS), they've succeeded. If they let you play it on the PS3, then a lot of people wouldn't have a reason to buy a PSP anymore.

On the flipside, PSP games on the PS3 also would cause a large spike in sales of games... who knows.

The point I suppose I didn't make is that PSP games on the PS3 will also sell more PSPs. If you're a PS3 gamer, and you've been dutifully buying up Disgaea 1 & 2, GoW:CoO, and so on, you've now accumulated a large collection of games that could be played on a PSP. Who's going to have a larger propensity to buy a PSP - someone with a bunch of PSP games, or someone with none? And, even if they don't buy the PSP hardware, Sony and their licensees are still making money off licenses.

Ultimately, it'll come down to an economics and math problem. I personally think they would make more money off PSP on PS3, but I can't substantiate that.

Also, there is the crazy, Dreamcast-esque piracy situation on the PSP-3k to consider... buying a PSP might actually reduce game sales. :)

I so want to play some PSP games, I only wish at some point they allow full PSP support, there are like 3 games I can think off that I would love to play i.e Chains of Olympus! But it looks like I might grab a cheap PSP (with component cable of course) play those games and then sell it again.

Is there a list of the minis that are playable on the PS3 yet? I've had the Tetris mini for a while, but last time I checked the PS3 playability update wasn't available. Rollout seems a little slow.

I'd buy a few PSP games to play on the PS3 as well.

I don't have a commute where a PSP makes sense, so I'd be playing them at home anyway -- and using the TV + Dual Shock sounds like a better way to play them.

lol @ complaining about a company supporting their product and adding new features.

Even if it's not something you yourself are particularly are interested in, I can't see what there is to complain about. It took maybe 3 minutes to download and install the update anyway.

PS3 updates killed my system :( My download got stuck at 99% for a few hours. Reset it. Starts back up again and continues to get stuck at 99%. So I reformat my HD. Same thing happens. Loads up to 99% then stops. Now it keeps looping back to the manual firmware install screen after I update it. It's sad cause I only played on it during break between semesters and have played 1 game total (MGS4). Probably won't get it replaced.
