FYI: Official MSE support for XP ending

Got a popup message on an XP box today telling me that support for Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows XP was ending. Took a screenshot:

Although ZDNet says continued support may be possible via other methods:

The unfortunate reality is that a large amount of consumers & businesses continue to run XP for a variety of reasons (financial, program support, etc.), so we still have to support it in IT. Ah well.

This quote is directly from Microsoft's website. No such popup appeared on my XP box.

"After support ends for Windows XP on April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates for Windows XP to help protect your PC against malware. On this same date, Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP. If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed when support ends for Windows XP, you will continue to receive Microsoft Security Essentials updates for a limited time to help identify malware on your PC. You can also still get the Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows XP for a limited time through Windows Update and the Download Center."

So far, the "limited time" has not been announced TTBOK.

You'll still have other companies supporting XP ,ie Malwarebytes and Avast etc ,http://blog.avast.com/2014/03/12/av...pport-windows-xp-for-home-and-business-users/

AVAST will continue to support Windows XP users by creating protection modules and detections to cover vulnerabilities and other security problems for at least the next three years. Our latest version, avast! Free Antivirus 2014, works well with older machines running Windows XP because of its light footprint, speed, and negligible resource consumption, making it a perfect choice even for older machines running Windows XP. AVAST protects more XP users than anyone else.

True, but even with protection, you're still at risk to get re-infected over and over again. They aren't going to patch MS security holes.

Very true and I've stated that a few times in OS forums ,that's why I'm on Linux and Win8.1 😉 .
