I've recently made use of the Win 8 memory diag tool - it's nice since it gives you a pass/fail in two passes and is included in Windows so you don't have to go download Memtest86 and make another boot disc/drive. However, if you can't boot into Windows, and instead boot off the Window disc/thumb drive, you might notice that the memory diagnostic is no longer listed as a troubleshooting option, whereas it used to be under Win 7. The tool is still there and available. Open command prompt from that same screen and type mdsched. It's a shame MS removed it from this screen, it might confuse someone looking for it who doesn't know it's still available. I guess they figured it wasn't valuable to a typical user. But, there it is.

I recommend keeping Win 8 on a bootable thumb drive even after install - it's very handy to be able to do system restore, image recovery, mem test, and startup repair if you're having issues.
