FYI: Don't use Castrol 10w-40 in your motorcycle...

DOH!
last week I ended up pushing my bike for about 3/4 of a mile because the clutch just completly gave out. Apparently there are certain additives in automotive motor oils that don't work with wet clutches at all...

you have a wet clutch. that means it uses the motor oil to lubricate and cool it. alot of motor oils are designated "Energy Conserving" on the API label. don't use these for the exact reasons you specified! simple enough. you'll be able to find alot of good motor oils that aren't energy conserving, though. valvoline synpower, castrol syntec, mobil 1 tan cap, most diesel motor oils.

This is why I go ahead and pay for the manufacturer oil when it comes to my bike. I mean, it's not that expensive (compared to regular oil maybe).

Never had a problem running Mobil or Mobil1 in ANY of my bikes and those I have worked on. Of course I never use castrol

yeah apparently it varies from oil to oil. Last time i got synthetic and haven't had issue, but that was mobil1. I can't remeber the name of the additive, but it's just the one thing that makes honda clutches slip

Maybe it's not the oil, but the oil weight instead. Did you check your owner's manual to see of you bike is even supposed to use 10w-40? I know that for whaever reason my Harley uses straight up 50w oil.

Most jap bikes call for 10W40 and Harleys seem to do well with 20w50. mind you I ran 15w50 Mobil1 in both and they seem to like it very well.

Halik, you are thinking of friction modifiers. They will cause wet cluths to slip. So stick to mobil1 15w50 and you will be good.

Amsoil is your friend. There's a great shop here in Farmington Hills if you ever come out this way. It's called Recreational Leisure. If you want me to buy you some good oil, I'll ship it to ya, but you're not that far away.

man, wtf? it seems that there isn't a Castrol 10w40 that is Energy Conserving. the oil shouldn't be the culprit in making your clutch slip. have you checked your cable for correct operation?

i don't believe in buying motor oil from the manufacturer, no matter what bike you use. it is undoubtedly a rebadged major brand oil that can be had for cheaper elsewhere. picking oil is easy, the manual will outline the proper grade, standards, and ratings that it should meet.

yep the Mobil1 15w50 is what I put in my Honda. Mind you it did not help me much when a full size SUV pulled out in front of me. :(
