On the heels of reports that attorneys general in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee are looking to allegations that some Blockbuster franchise stores have begun charging late fees again without notifying customers, Blockbuster issued a statement on Thursday acknowledging that about 160 of its 515 franchisees have dropped the "no late fees" policy. The company said that the independent stores had done so because they could not afford to buy the inventory needed to allow customers to keep the rented movies for lengthy periods of time.

it wont' matter in a few years when everything is on demand and we wondered why we ever had to drive anywhere or how a movie wasn't always available with a couple of clicks

Haha, watch, they'll get sued AGAIN.

Can't win for having late fees, so they drop them...then get sued, now some stores are bringing them back.

LOL @ Blockbuster's outdated business model.

Seriously, they are now going to get sued for false advertising.
Who is running this company anyway? Some stores could not afford the inventory, so they just started charging people?
It sounds like the horse is pushing the cart.

We are almost there now. I get most of my movie rentals from Time Warner Cable's IControl.

I worked at one in 2001, and we had a great store. Lots of business, cool people ran it, etc. But now, with netflix, on demand cable, internet downloads, I don't think even the best stores can possibly be turning much of a profit.

Maybe I'm wrong.

i don't even go to Blockbuster anymore b/c they told me not to come again after I refsued to pay a late charge. It's been 2 years and I still have not paid it. I even got a collections notice....I have not even paid that. It really has not effected my credit either since every aprtment I have applied too has said I have had good credit.

In the end Hollywood Video FTW!

Good credit for an apartment means that you've never declared bankruptcy, weren't late TOO much on payments, and as long as your rent is <40% of your pay, they couldn't care less.

I'd check your credit report for real to make sure that the BB collections is not on there.

What I am wondering is how are that going to survive RedBox and other's like it, they have the top 20 or so rentals, and charge only a dollar. Here in Houston, these things are all over the place, even Krogers has one.

I actually like Blockbuster. Their Rewards membership is perfect for me, and I just got a mail today that basically said "Come in and get a free previously viewed DVD."

Never, ever have rented from blockbuster. These shady actions by franchise owners reinforce the fact that I will never.

They keep sending me coupons for .99 rentals so I keep going in. I refuse to pay crazy rental fees when there's so many other options. No coupon, no rental.

I have no problem with the demise of Blockbuster. I've been screwed over by them too many times to care.

I for one, welcome our new Netflix and OnDemand overlords.

Just FYI, in the membership agreement, it says blockbuster can change the rental terms at any time, with or without notice. Blockbuster would've won each time it got sued for late fee issues, but settlement's are always an easier route.
