FYI 2405FPW ghosts while fps gaming

Well it's a gorgeous screen, but everyone who ever bothered to write about it said that there wasn't any ghosting. Either they aren't heavy into gaming or they lied. It's not terribly bad - pixel or two of chop that makes gameplay seem slightly laggy. Will have to play it out and see if I can adjust to it.
Anyway, just fyi to anyone who games heavily.

but, my god, the pixels on this thing are needle sharp, and not a single one dead ..
 
I don't know if I call it ghosting, which is more a persistence thing. But I believe I know what you mean. I think it is more due to the relatively slow refresh rate. But whatever, I can tell you that it didn't bother me after a day or so. The monitor is just too excellent to use for everything else. Suppose you could always run dual and have a CRT next to it.

Fortunately, Wolfenstein which I play a lot (at least used to) was darkish and didn't blur hardly at all (after I got used to it). The overall color really does matter. Response time is different across the spectrum.

Anyway, call this blurring. Ghosting is an effect caused when analog signals coincide, or something like that.
 
The 2405 screen is my 3rd LCD. I it the best monitor I have ever had (LCD or CRT)
.I played HL2 (very prone to ghosting on my 2nd LCD) and Fracry on it and I can't see any ghosting - really.

I do see some shimmering even with 78.03 drivers, which is a very disturbing experience to me.

I would suggest using Vert. Sync and Triple Buffering if possible. Reset your driver to default and start from scratch, cranking up one thing at a time.

Which card are you using?


 
No ghosting here..

My old monitor was a very, very nice 21" HP CRT made for graphics that was just beautiful. I was scared going to the LCD because I had heard that gaming quality wasn't as good and blah blah.. so I bought my 2405 and tried it out, and it is just awesome!

 
just got my two new Dells and I havent had any ghosting problems on either yet. Have yet to fully test each of them beyond an hour or two of BF2 though. No dead pixels though
 
9800SE hardmod to pro for the card.

vertical sync and tripple buffering are on.

Just finished a couple hours, and I think I will adjust to it just fine. Pretty sweet being able to bump the FOV up from 110 to 130 with no ill effects 🙂

The feel is sort of film-like - when you move rapidly, things get blurry around the edges. I bumped gamma down a notch and that seemed to help. It's probably going to take weeks to figure out the right settings for this thing 😀

Edit: oh, since I got you guys on the line - I set my brightness to 0, and adjusted gamma and brightness down in the display control panel. I noticed that contrast cannot be adjusted on the monitor OSD (it is set to 50%). Is this a DVI thing, or did I goof up a setting somewhere?

It's a DVI thing; since you're sending the monitor a digital signal, there aren't as many settings on the monitor to adjust. If you want to play with contrast, you'll do it at the video card end.
 
But you can adjust all those settings, and more, from within the nVidia driver control panel. That's the place to do it when using the DVI connect. Unlike the monitor controls, you have different settings for the desktop/images and video overlays.

Ouch. I spend $800-$1000 on a monitor, I don't want to get used to something annoying? For that much cash it better make breakfast besides it's normal duties.
 
[Could it be that his card.. 9800SE -> pro.. isnt up to snuff for that monitor?

That's something to bear in mind too. I have a 6800GT, and it plays games very well, but pushing 1920 x 1200 pixels around takes a lot of oomph.
 
Very possible. I've never tried the monitor on anything less than a high end card, so... *shrugs*

The same reason people spend $1000 on an aperature grille CRT even though it has a couple of faint lines or quirky geometry (among having huge depth and weight). But it does have accurate color reproduction and black level when properly calibrated, doesn't it?

The advantages outweigh the small quirks for many. It (blurring) is technically an issue, but practically (at least barely) it is not for lots of people like myself. Despite the blurring, I still love my LCD. That said I myself wouldn't spend that much on an LCD, especially because newer technologies (with much less blurring) are emerging like color-filterless LCDs, not to mention SED and OLED (sooner or later). My current 17" "only" cost $430 (when it was top-notch). I got it because I can not use a CRT for extended periods without getting red-eye or neck aches, even at 120 Hz.

For the most part, blurring is not an issue for me (but I don't game a whole lot anymore). It does depend on the game. I have found that games like Wolfenstein play excellently due to the darker gray having a lower response. But when I move on a tank in Battlefield 2, it can actually start to get annoying (when trying to scan for enemy flags). I still like the vibrant colors and razor-sharp detail though, and manage to put the blurring issue aside. If all you do is game, then I can't see why you'd want an LCD either (unless you have eye problems like me). However most people do more than just game. I'd find an LCD a lot more comfortable for watching movies on too. I can only figure blurring has been reduced even more since I got my LCD. With the BF2 blur issue being my sole bone to pick with my monitor (17"), I have found it perfectly acceptable for all gaming purposes, even when I used to game for longer periods. I can't see how it would be any different for a 2405FPW, which probably has an even better response time. I could be wrong though. As long as what's blurring doesn't have the need for me to comprehend it (like a flag being x feet away, I need to see that), then it is no issue at all. I could care less if the ground blurs, because I don't need to read it.

99.99% of the time, everything expensive you buy has its own minor issues. A Porsche will break down sooner or later. Because you paid $200,000 (or however much) on it does not mean it's invincible, and you should not expect that either. It doesn't matter if it's electronic or mechanical. If you disagree, name one thing that doesn't have any issues. IMO, pencils and paper don't have any issues but I can't think of much else. It is the OP's responsibility to know what he's getting when he buys something. Basing decisions off other people's opinions is a bad idea IMO. Go to the store and check it out for yourself.

That's what I do with my 2005FPW. I have my 2005FPW and my G90F setup so when I need that extra preformance I just switch my primary display over to the G90F and BAM frag city.

if my widescreen LCD is supposed to make breakfast.. then you'd better have all those GPUs making the bed, opening the door for you and rubbing your back! 😀

PS. 2005FPWs and 2405FPWs are great screens. Someday you'll have to cave in and get a LCD.. they dont ghost, at least mine doesnt.. I dont know what these guys are talking about (maybe I have inferior eyes).. to me, its 10X above anything with DVI+cleartype. I think gaming is crisper too with the DVI. And web browsing in portrait mode is just orgasmic..

Don't misunderstand me - This monitor is totally sweet 😀

I only went widescreen over standard because I wanted it to be my television too. I went LCD because I wanted the smaller footprint and weight.

Frankly, if I gamed less it would be better for me 🙂

I don't think that the blurring (if it's not "ghosting") will keep me from playing, but because there is so much information out there that DOESN'T mention it (in fact, half of you guys still don't even see it 😉) I thought that I ought to mention it in a thread so that someone who is considering getting it primarily for gaming would have a second opinion, as it were.

This is the same guy that said in other thread that the 7800 shimmering doesn't bother him (a 1000 buck pair of cards that shimmer can pay the 2405 and the breakfast). And that I was rich because I thought about selling my 7800 and buying an ATI.

But you are not allowed to think differently from him, otherwise he will think that you have a secret agenda etc etc......

Nah hes a pretty cool guy from what I can tell.. and he argues with facts. Of course the shimmering might not bother him but thats opinion.
Everytime I've asked Rollo to backup a claim he has done so.. or conceded he was wrong. :thumbsup: :beer:

He's def wrong about LCDs. 😉 With the exception of maybe 1 or 2 members here at AT.. hand anyone a 2005FPW or 2405FPW and they will toss their CRT out the window in a week. I'm looking at this webpage in 1050x1680 glory right now.

Its not even a big LCD (IMO), and unless people turn their CRTs sideway 1680 vertical is tough to match without a bigger LCD. Theres a whole sh*t ton of reasons why you'd have to take LCDs out of my cold dead hands.. thats just a big one..

I really need to cut myself off before I rant too much about my LCD. :heart:
