FX5900U - how bad are ramsinks needed?

I just put the Zalman dual heat pipe cooler on my FX 5900 Ultra - it did not come with enough ramsinks (8 of the needed 16). I have a pack on order to be here in a few days - how necessary are these?

Just to be safe, I left the molex unplugged so the card will run in gimp mode for now.
