FX5700LE 256MB vs. TI4600 128MB

I'm looking to upgrade my video card (will swap the TI4600 into another box still using onboard video chip) and wondering if the FX5700LE 256MB 8x AGP would indeed be any upgrade over the TI4600 128MB 4x AGP.

While I would love to just get the 6800 GT, it's beyond my price range, and I've never really felt I've gotten my money's worth buying the fastest card on the market with the speed the video cards change at now.

Or is there another nVidia suggestion that would stay under $250?

If you're stuck with nVidia then for under $250 there are several FX5900 options that are faster than the 5700 (more ram does not always mean faster), possibly you might even find a 6800NU for under $250 if you are lucky, or there is the possibility of a 6600 solution coming to AGP sometime soon...

A 5700 wouldn't be much of an upgrade.
You can get an FX5900 or FX5900XT for about 170$ or a vanilla 6800 for about 250$ or a little more.

5700 will be faster with AA and AF, slower without, Vram means nothing between the two, look for a 5900 or better for that price.

The 5700LE is pathetic, it needs to be overclocked almost 50% to have comparable performance to the regular 5700, and 5700u. If $150 is your budget, look for a used 9800 Pro. Don't limit yourself to just nVidia, if you never try something else, there's no way you can know. Here's a good overview of card performance. VGA Charts IV

EDIT: If you want to do nVidia, get a 5900XT.

Doesn't the standard 6800 go for about $250 over in the US?

The 6600GT should be out in AGP flavour in the next month or two, why not wait for that - I assume it will be in your budget and you'll see a significant increase in performance over your 4600.

I'll agree with these suggestions.
Wait: 6600gt ($200 in 1 month)
non-nv now: 9800p ($200)
nv now: 6800nu (~$250)

-the non ultra 6800 beats the 6600gt and the 9800p so its not really a problem later on if u buy the 6800nu now. It's not like ur getting a bad deal or anything.

This seems to fit your budget exactly: BFG 6800OC That would beat up a TI series card black n' blue. If you're willing to drop $250, go for it.

If you're going to consider something, consider this card.

Thanks for the info. Will wait and see what the 6600 cards will be and get either that or a 6800, although I'm leaning towards the 6800 atm.

Thanks again.

Yeah that is true wiht all technology. If you wait prices will always drop but in doing so somehting new will come out that will be alot better. So i guess when it comes down to it you need ot bite the bullet and buy when you think its a reasonable price. But what ever you buy now will be out of date in 6 monthes easily.

Well, the Radeon 9700 Pro came out over 2 years ago and it plays the latest games quite well. It's just a question of whether you prefer to spend $400 for a video card that will last you 2 years, or spend $150 for a year-old video card that will last you a year.

stay away from fx series in general, i recommend you spending ~$200 and getting a 6600gt agp
best card hands down in that price range IMO (xfx has already released a agp version)

there are a couple at pricewatch already, look around

i would tend to agree.. i just threw my fx5700le in for fun to see what it could do.. managed to overclock it from 250/400 to 475!/490 heh.. mem wont go higher with artifacts (using ATI artifact tool) but at 475/490 it seems to be rock solid.. thats like 100% OC on the core.. these cores do seem to oc well, i think they use the same for all the models, the main difference is the RAM.. mine seems to have fairly cheap ram, but a near 20% OC on that alone isnt bad.. Aquamark scores went from 16k to 26k with the OC heh.

I saw new 9700 pros on dutch auction "buy now" on eBay for $137. Great price for something that stomps any <$200 Nvidia card.
