FX5500 to 6800GS

I have a friend that want to upgrade his video card. He currently has an EVGA FX5500 with an ASUS A8V motherboard. He was considering upgrading it to a 7800GS but I have read that the 7800GS has some problems. I was wondering if the 6800GS would be a sufficient upgrade. Would there be much of a difference? Before you ask, no he will not upgrade to PCI-e. I have tried to talk him into it but it would be way over his head to do the upgrade. Any other ideas?

It would be a very good upgrade.

If he can go to the 7800GS, even better, but make sure that he has a solid PSU for either card, especially since he might still have the stock PSU seeing that he's still on an FX5500.
