BFG Fx5500

lifetime warranty, 256MB of fast ddr mem for around 100 bucks what more could a modest gamer want ?

do you think someone that just plays UT games would like this card ??
how is the shadowing performance for games like Thief's latest release ?

Get the 9600 pro. The Powercolor is the same price. I treat the FX's like they were a plague. (sorry rollo)

This blows that thing away, no contest 🙂

that is basically a FX5200 which is what i got now cept for the bga mem

I hope by your saying that you mean that with linux that card performs on par with a 5200, because in windows world the 9600 beats the life-force out of the 5200. Get a plain ol' 5700 if you're in the markey for an nVidia based card.

linux is faster unless you reinstall windows every few months to keep it from bloating itself and choking on it's own vomit :0

lol don't bring linux into this.

Windows wont bloat itself if you know how to take card of the pc. My installations usually last a good year+. It is barely any faster on a clean install then normal. Just learn to keep some anti spyware programs, anti virus, firefox, a good firewall, and all your windows updates, and just maintain your pc in general, and you will never have to format.

Definitely get the 6600GT if you can afford it, but if you're going for the next step down from there I think your only options are thte 5700ultra or the 9600xt. Both are problematic. Ati drivers aren't great in linux as you mentioned and the 5700ultra has questionable performance in DX games.

To get anything below those two cards, as a gamer, would be pointless. Better off waiting until you can afford something better than buy something alread out of date.

And they both have questionable costs given the performance they bring to the table 😉

Soul Keeper,

I think the decision is pretty simple. Even though im a Nvidia guy, they fx5X00 cards were just plain terrible from the cost/performance issue.

Since you cant use and ATI card becuase of linux, for the Modest Gamer the upgrade is the 6600GT. Otherwise you might as well stay with your 5200 over getting a different 5X00 card.

I was thinking that the 6200 was going to be right up your alley, as I had read good reviews on them, and they were right in your price range... til i reread the review, and realized the all the 6200's will be PCIe, which you dont have.

So I too suggest the 6600gt.

Good luck on your purchase! Let us know what you bought and how you like it!

just got a chaintech fx5500 256mb for a budget system i just built, it overclocks incredibily well and im scoring 11,000+ easily in aquamark when its with my A64 3000+ and 512mb ram. I think its a solid card for 79 shipped at zipzoomfly

Solid advice. Since your only option is Nvidia, and since you're not going to want to "upgrade" to another FX series card, you should either get a 6600GT, or nothing at all.

Phew, it's a good thing we resurrected this two month old thread, otherwise Soulkeeper might've made a mistake!
