Don't go to Ebay for a 170! Check with Tankguys - OEM for $385 plus shipping. Or else go to ZZF, Mwave, Egg or Monarch - all of these places sell for around $400 plus shipping (and tax)

ok, new question...

what are the benefits of going with the opteron 170 vs the opteron 165 (both ccbwe 0550)? i've read that they both easily hit 2.8ghz on air. can the 170 go further than the 165 can on water or do they both have the same ceiling there, too?

165 has a 9x multiplier, 170 has a 10x multiplier. I think they both max out around the same overclock. Somebody else will know better.

well not all will EASILY hit 2.8. 165 your highest multiplier is x9 and 170 is x10.
but I would get the 170 hands down from Tankguys.

but i don't want the 0546 one. i'd want the 0550 one. i don't think they have it on there.

I own both processors. I will be selling my FX-55 soon. The Opty performs better on a clock for clock basis. You have a good chance to get the Opty to the stock speed of the FX-60.

I have a 148 that does 3+Ghz on air, and form what I have been reading that is right around average for them. No need to sepned the extra $.

The multiplier is the biggest difference. Unless you have a really good board you will be limited by it and not the CPU as I am. Ive got a solid board but its going to take more than what I have to get to 3.0 even though the cpu could do it with no problem.

wow the opteron is pitching a shutout. I would have at least thought there would be on Fx fanboy saying to buy it no matter what the performance/cost ratio is.

the 170 from tank guys 3 days ago have it to 2.7 price 389 what more can i say except that i'm a happy little geek

The FX-55 probably still costs at least 2x what an Opty 170 does (I haven't looked at FX-55 prices lately so I can't be sure 😛), and you have an excellent chance of taking the 170 to 2.6 or maybe even more...and you get an extra core...for half the money...yeah, real hard decision there 😛
