fx53 or 3500

I am building a system from a AthlonXP 2400 266 frontside bus to a 939 system. I can't decide whether to get a 3500+ or fx-53. What do you guys think about difference in price/performance.

New system


939 Asus board
3500+ or FX-53
1024 Corsair 2-2-2-5 DDR400
Ati x800XT Platinum
 
IMHO -- Right now, all the S939 stuff is way overpriced. You'd be better off getting a S754 ATM.

However, the FX-53 ($799) is certainly NOT 65% faster than the 3500+ ($485), so its price/performance ratio is going to be a lot worse. If I had to pick one of them, I'd take the 3500+ and try to OC it. You could probably get at least 3800+ speeds (2.4Ghz) with some high-speed RAM and decent cooling.
 
since you obviously have a lot of money to spend/lose, i think you should stick wtih socket 939 and go for an 3500+ or 3800+. the 3800+ is near the fx-53 speeds and is a more reasonable price/performance cpu. if i had the money like you to spend, then i'd go with teh 3800+.
 
To directly answer your question: 3500+. Is that much power really neccessary though? You're going to pay excessive amounts of cash for it.
 
thanks guys. i have a 2400XP KM266 computer now and i am getting the x800xt and want to actually get some benefit so i thought about upgrading.

Also does the 3500+ use the 800 hypertransport or the 1000? I would like to know for potential overclocking issues
 
how about the 3800 or fx53? do they use 800 or 100 hypertransport

Also what is the 939 motherboard now to get?

What is a reasonable overclock on the 3500 air cooled? 2300 or 2350? Just curious?
 
You will generally get the best overclocking results, percentage wise, with the slowest-clocked chips made on a given process. So, to compare the overclocking prowess of the 3500 and the 3800, I would say the 3500 would be the better bet for the money.
 
Definately 3500+, unless you're rich or your livelyhood depends on the extra speed. I would suggest getting the 3500+ and spending the rest on a nice LCD.

Yes, the FXs = better value for your money, but justifiably?
I don't think so.
 
Get FX if you would otherwise normally upgrade once a year and would be willing to keep this CPU for 3 years.

With the money you save you can afford phase change, which would extend the life of the FX by another 8 months to a year and would let you re-use the phase change when dual core K9s come out. Or one would hope anyway.

I can't speak for the retail heatsink on the 3500+, but the one that came with the FX-53 is amazingly good/quiet. Asus pc probe reads about 45c in windows and 55 under load.
 
hey nortexid i guess all those people with cars over 10,000 dollars shows marketing really works to. Hell anyone who has more than a 6000 dollar car is buying marketing. Oh wait, this is a capitalist system is it not? If someone buys a phase change is the fx worth it then? Why? Just go away and keep your condension and I'll bet hypocritical doublespeak away from my honest questions about learning. If you look at my original thread i was thinking about a 3500+ also. A year and a half from now I can drop a dual core (provided AMD provides a 939 dualcore of course and the motherboard is compatible,lol, and get 60% more performance)Try not to let your own arrogance let you fall. LOL O.k. now i feel better and have decided to wait a month
