FX5200 vs. 6200 power consumption.

FX5200 won't run Windows 7 Aero properly at 1080p. As far as I can see, it is just a driver issue.

8400GS won't boot in the computer in question, despite having PSU requirements only slightly higher than the FX5200.

6200 supposedly uses less power than the FX5200. If an FX5200 functions in a system, is there any reason a 6200 wouldn't?

It might not have enough VRAM for 1080p if it's a Turbocache model which can have as little as 32 MB of dedicated video memory (don't know if Aero works correctly with shared+dedicated VRAM systems). 128 MB of VRAM is required for Aero according to MS. Like I said, nothing is mentioned about shared/dedicated/Turbocache/Hypermemory, but it could be an issue. But seriously I think you probably just don't have enough in the first place if you're trying to run Aero in such a high res.

What interface? The 8400GS that doesn't work in it, does it use a bridge chip?

IDK the actual power draw numbers, but all of these are usually passively cooled by little heatsinks, so they shouldn't draw much.

The 8400GS in question does use a bridge chip. I didn't think about that. These are PCI interface cards used in an extremely old computer. Given that the 6200 is a PCI card, it obviously doesn't use TurboCache. It is a 256MB model, though I'm not sure that it can use that RAM effectively.

Edit: I don't know if nVidia redesigned their bridges, but 6200s use the HSI bridge. I recall it being used (in the opposite direction) for the PCX 5x00 cards. Does anyone know what kind of power consumption I'm looking at with it? Perhaps the bridge itself is causing the issue, and not the power consumption?

The computer is an old Dell. The PSU is rated for 180w, but is currently supporting a P4B 2.66, FX5200, and 2GB PC2100 DDR without issue. It doesn't shut down at high power draw; I've Linpacked the CPU while running GPU benchmarks (can't OCCT an FX5200) without causing a shutdown.

I don't know why you see more Geforce 6200 and 8400 cards out there on the market but you can still buy some overpriced Geforce 9400 / 9500 GT PCI cards.

Have you considered those?

No, they serve no purpose to me.

No PCI GPU is going to be "good" by any measure. A properly supported GPU would allow Aero to function properly, however. PCI 9500 GT is the most absurd thing I've ever heard of, anyway; I have an overclocked PCI-E 9500 GT which should fall somewhere around a 6800/Ultra in performance. The PCI bus would be far more than completely saturated by that

It probably is the bridge chip. I've seen those cause problems before. PCI slots support up to 25W maximum, so cards would have to draw less than that. I think usually manufacturers won't ride the exact maximum. For instance, there have been some graphics cards that used a 6-pin PCIe power plug which used just under the 75W allowed by a PCIe slot.

Do you know any of the specifics of the bugs related to the bridge?

The 8400GS actually POSTs. As soon as Windows is supposed to begin bootiing, the screen just stays black. If the GPU is plugged in and the integrated video is set as the default display, Windows actually installs the 8400's drivers as it should.

I can't figure this out.

its because some motherboard company have trouble meeting standard PCI, and thats why creative sound card have a lot of trouble, and some ppl just blame creative crappy driver.

btw AMD card have better support, heck I even seeing some PPL playing crysis with their P3 and GD 2400 PCI !!!!!
