fx5200 screen 'flashing' at boot

I have an Asus FX5200 (V9520 Magic) on an Intel board (D865PERL) with a 2.6C.
When I boot up, the display flashes two or three times when coming into Windows Desktop. These are serious flashes, the screen goes completely dark, and then resets. If I dump the nVidia drivers, and boot, the screen does not flash. I have tried three different versions of the detonator drivers, and they all do the same thing.
I also have occaisonal forced reboots at boot (very fast blue screens), and I think these items are related.
Can anyone help? I thought this mught be a 'known issue'.
thanx,
Ron

I should also mention that I am running XP Home with all available updates.
I am also running this on an older CRT monitor. Could this be an issue?

Thanx,
Ron
