This might seem like a straightforward question with a straightforward answer but I need to ask it anyway, I built a computer for a friend and he does Solely AutoCAD, and maybe infrequently SolidWorks I think. he currently has an HD6870 but I recently got an FX4600 as a gift and wanted to know if the 4600 would better suit my friend, I heard AutoCAD runs fine on gaming cards but wanted to make sure we were both using our cards to their fullest ability.

The FX 4600 is a workstation card based on the GeForce 8800, the card is coming up on being five years old this November. I think it is safe to say that the 6870 would preform much better in any application, professional or not, then the FX 4600.

Is this based on assumptions or proof?

These types of questions are extremely difficult to answer. For starters where are you going to find benchmarks of a 2007 model year FX4600 in modern versions of AutoCAD/SolidWorks? Secondly, it's going to be just as difficult to find benchmarks of HD6870 in professional apps since it's not even made for that either. I think you should just give your friend the card and let him test out both. Way faster and more accurate than what you'll get here.

Honestly, I think your friend would be better off selling his 6870 and just spending a couple bucks more for the FirePro V4900 if all he does is AutoCAD. If he can sell the 6870 for $110 or so and pay $40-50 more for this 4900, it'll most likely be a worthwhile $50 upgrade out of pocket.

We just built the computer 2 months ago so I dont think he want to start selling it for a loss yet :p

Ill just bring over the card and well see which is better.
