FX-8xxx mobo for overclocking?

So I just got the FX-8310 and I have the Asus M5A97-R2.0 motherboard (4+2 phase).

I seem to be having trouble overclocking with it though and am wondering if I need a better motherboard. Even the stock 4.3ghz @ 1.4125v doesn't work without giving me a hard lockup. Lowering the voltage seems to help it last longer before the lockup.

CPU temps aren't the problem.

I recommend the Crosshair V... it's a reasonably priced board with great OC features. I use one myself.

The Mobo in my sig works pretty decently. Day 1 a couple years ago I set my 8320 to 4ghz and everything has been fine since.

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0?

ASRock 990FX Extreme9/Fatal1ty Pro?

Or the GA-970A-UD3P if on a lower budget?

It would be helpful OP, if you could give us your budget and then we could narrow things down for you. All of the boards mentioned are good picks, and if you need cooling/OC advice I'm sure we could further assist you there as well.

honestly, as cheap as possible as gets me something that OC's well (8+2 phase I presume) with 4 slots for RAM.

I like that!

is there anything I can do to figure out if I've got a bad motherboard? These are supposed to be able to take the CPU to 4.3ghz 24/7.

edit: I think it's the CPU. I can hit 4.3ghz at 1.3v but 4.5ghz requires at least 1.4v and my cooler, good as it is, can't handle that. Also, enabling CnQ consistently causes lockups.

I would say, peg it at 4.3 and call it a day. That speed @ 1.3v is actually pretty good. The scaling past 4.3 isn't. Maybe it's the chip, maybe it's the board, hard to say. What are you using to cool the CPU?

Thermalright Ultra-120.

yeah I have set it and called it a day. unsure what to do about not having CnQ though.
