So last night my PC randomly shuts off... didn't think much of it, until it did it again a few minutes later. Let it sit for a while, fired it back up and kept an eye on the core temps (8120 says MAX safe temp is 61*c).

Processor is using stock cooler and is NOT OC'd

I'll idle at 33*c and out of know where all cores jump to like 45*c (sometimes as high as 50*c) for a few seconds and back down.

I started battlefield to see what that would do and very quickly would approach 70*C.
... any reason for the crazy jumps and spikes?
I assume it might be time to re-apply thermal paste, any other things to try first?

Check that the CPU fan is actually spinning during operation. Blow out any dust accumulation on the fan blades. Clean and replace the TIM. Double-check the BIOS voltage and CPU fan settings, especially if you just flashed it. Check dust filters for all case intake fans.

FYI, AMD idle temps are not accurate, per AMD.

I completely striped down the PC today, cleaned it all spotless and re-installed everything, running much cooler now.

There wasn't as much dust as I would have expected, must have just been in the right spots.
