FX-6100 Overclocking Help

My system is stable at stock voltage at 4.0ghz.. when I try going any higher and play a game then it starts making the game unstable.. What should I do? Or can I just not go any higher?

I have an H80 Corsair liquid cooling CPU cooler.

I also am using GTX 550 ti and the game im playing is Team Fortress 2

So I know its not Video Card related.
 
Well I overclock to 4.5ghz and the temps don't even go over 45 on load...

So I know its not temp related. I raise the volts and it still crashes. I raised it to 1.6 volts and it still crashes.

I think it could be my memory timings but I don't want to mess with those because I don't want to screw up something.
 
Are you overclocking using multiplier only? Also, how good are the PWMs on your board?

Do you have any way of verifying the voltages? Even a kill a watt meter can do it, indirectly, by measuring prime95 load power from the wall. Measure at different voltages and the power readings should be significantly different.
 
I dropped it to exactly 1.45 volts... But its weird in CPU-z it says its still at 1.3250 volts even after I change it in the bios. Its weird.
 
Even with a load it still just says 1.3250....

In hardware monitor its like 0.5 volts lower than what I set it at... So I set it to 1.5 and HWMonitor says its 1.45

So I guess thats the drop.
 
ok set the volts to 1.4 and the multiplier to 23x and run prime95 for a while and see if its stable ? what's your motherboard ?

all FX cpu can hit up to 4.4GHz on stock no problem so i think its something else ?

This is absolutely not true. My FX-6100 can do 4GHz on stock, but anything above requires additional voltage. I also can't overclock my CPU past about 4.3GHz. It is not stable at any voltage above 4.4GHz. It could be my CPU or my motherboard.

To the OP, keep in mind that every chip is slightly different. Cheaper motherboards tend to not overclock as well, though I'm not exactly sure what you're running.

I would recommend overclocking with your multiplier only, that way you don't have to mess with RAM timings. Check for voltage droop and enable LLC if you need to. That should fix the voltage drop. And sometimes you have to offset the voltage in the motherboard by a greater amount that you'd think so that it actually uses the voltage you're looking for. There are some other settings you can enable/disable to make overclocking more stable, which I would recommend researching. Did you turn off turbo boost? You'll definitely need to do that when overclocking.
 
My motherboard is a MSI- 970a-G46

All power saving features are off and turbo core is off..

And I can't get it stable past 4.3 either using prime95.
 
Drop your voltage to 1.39-1.4v.
Try to increase your VDDND to 1.2v.
Make sure your RAM (what model?) is running at the stock voltage and settings.

The best that I could do with my 6100 was 4.2 (i couldn't get higher than this regardless of the voltage)- at this speed (4200) I was able to enable turbo though, managed to run turbo at 4.7

I wound up changing mine out for a 960T.
