MSI GFX FX5700-VTD128 AGP8X DDR DVI VIVO RETAIL 204.99

MSI GFX FX5900XT-VTD128 VIVO DDR DVI TV-OUT RETAIL 292.99

Hey Im looking at those 2 models, im budget conscious so I can't spen too much, but those are the prices in CAD, so is the 5900 really worth the extra money? im planning to build a new computer 6 or so months down the road, and the guy said, its cheaper to go with hte 5700, and get a way better video card 6 months down the road with my new system, cause the 5700 as he called it, is 'the closest thing prior to the high end card' im planning to run WoW on highest I can. Doom 3 on 800x 600 medium, if i can, is this sound advice he gave me? he said I can get it for 195 no taxes Canadian dollar

If you want to play Half-Life 2 then a Radeon 9600 Pro or XT is a better choice than the 5700.

The price of the 5900 is very close to what a AGP 6600GT will hopefully sell for in a few weeks, and the 6600GT is much, much better than the fx5900 for Doom3 and Half-Life 2.

Click the Video tab at the top of the page for some benchmarks.

Avoid the FX 5xxx series at all costs. The 6600 GT is your best bet, but if you can't wait for prices to drop, try some last-gen ATIs depending on exact budget:
New: 9800 Pro, 9600 Pro/XT
Used: The above or 9700 Pro, 9500 Pro

Get a 9800 Pro in that price range it's far better than pretty much any FX card. but your truly best bet is a 6600GT or even a plain old 6600

It's almost two years old. Technology has no mercy when it comes to time.:(

I had a 5900 to for about that price and loved it until farcry came out and crippled it at higher resolutions. It's almost year later and even more games abuse it severly.

Niether of those cards are worth $150 let alone what you're proposing. Thier price to performance ratio is horrendously poor.

Get the 6800OC for $250
http://shop3.outpost.com/produ...sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Which is almost 2x faster than the 5900 and over 2x faster than the 5700:

Did you miss that this is in Candian Dollars

YEs I did , but it dos'nt change my answer would'nt you agree?

What's a 6800OC in canada cost? Probably the same price he's contimplating the 5900 for ~300, a card that half as fast.

I have the 5900XT and it plays Doom3 and HL2 well, including AA, but not at very high resolutions. For HL2 tthere's the patch to trade high-reflection water for some barely visible color depth.

Having said that, I would not buy a slower card than this, especially for Doom3. HL2 will adapt and you get less quality, but Doom3 will just crawl.

Also beware that stock fans on GeForce FX 5xx0 cards seems to be loud as hell, I had to put a NV silencer on.

Overall the 5900xt is not a bad choice if you want to avoid ATI. The 6800 OC at outpost is not in stock, IIRC, so both 6600GT and 6800 would cost quite a bit more than the 5900XT and neither will play Unreal3. And GeForce FX cards play many older games very nice at high resolutions with full AA.

If the 5900XT is your upper price comfort level, then it's really not that bad a choice. The 5700 I would say is a bad choice.

Nice post Martin!

ComatoseDelirium,

If you funds are really limited then it all depends on what games you are going to play. Look around at some of the reviews like the ones here at Anandtech and see how each card benchmarks in the games you expect to play. I have the 5900 and have it overclocked to 5950 speeds. It plays Halflife2 ok but not the best. The 6600 agp would be a better choice and is close in the same price range I think.

Ok, for the prices you listed, the 6600GT AGP is the best bet. It is available in Canada, for under 300. You won't be disappointed with this card, it mops the floor with the 5700 and 5900.

If you don't mind spending 350-400 dollars, 6800 is an even better card.

Do not get Nvidia 5xxx cards. If you do have to get last-gen cards go ATI. Their 5xxx cards are the main reason why ATI has gained its market-share so quickly.
