Good deal on the San Diego core. I passed the last time this deal was around because I want to build a C2D system. However these high ram prices are making think twice about that. Going with this I could use my existing DDR ram.

The following cpu's have not changed in price since this afternoon:

Opteron 165 is around $155 with free shipping at the Egg. I have the ccbbe 0616xpmw

No change to overclock it yet

Will these AMD price drop even more once there new 65 nm chips are released Tuesday?
Anyone know what's the best bang for the buck CPU for gaming; the AMD X2 or the dual core Opteron? I see the 4600 X2 (2.4GHz) for $226 selling for about what the Opteron 175 (dual core, 2.2GHz) for $228 is currently selling for; for an avid gamer (who likes to overclock) which chip to go with? Thanks!

Those Opteron 165s seem to all clock to 2.7Ghz easily, even with the stock fan. That's a heck of a deal for $158, better than the FX-55 for $139, if your not afraid to overclock.

Not all of them, I can only push mine to 2.52 with OCZ Plat ram though I think it is mainly the ram as my CPU never gets above 36c. Though I got my Opty 165 last december so the new versions may be even better at overclocking.

Original Equipment Manufacturer; it means the main item only, without any added packaging and accessories typically. For a CPU, that means no included fan.

Crapwich. I missed it the first time at $139 and figured it wouldn't go back down for a while so I picked up the combo deal they had with the Seagate SATA 250gb hard disk foor $200. Doh! Well maybe I can get a few bucks for the hard disk on FSFT.

Yes, you're correct.
Socket 939 is dead.
The new 65 nanometre SOI design is reserved for socket AM2, revision G release, which is just around the corner.
The current socket AM2 is revision F.

You think it is worth the extra $20 for a 170 (10x) vs the 165 (9x) ? I've been watching these for a while - my concern is that the pipeline is drying up so I'm not sure if the 165/170 will see much more in the way of price drop (mabye they will?) . If you can get 2.65ghz with the 165 then the 170 would be around 3ghz with the same amount of overclocking? What would that be 1/2 fps or 2 fps ?

Would sound like it should but the 165 is a better OC'er. I do not think 3ghz is a reality.

The 170 would allow more room for error since its starting pont is higher

You should really try to find another $39 to spend on this CPU as it is really the BB4$.
Thanks Corpun for posting this...I also got in on the last San Diego "AMDROCKS", and it does. :D:D:D

Imho, dual core for everyday use at the 939 level is waste of processing power unless you fold or do heavy graphics; and only if you have graphics needs that will lend themselves to a dual-core.

Yes, there are many progs that run in the background.

I can play a game and a full virus scan and a spyware search also run and not a bit of a slowdown

I received my 165 last Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving) from Newegg. It was a CCBBE (!) 0617

The thing about the 165 is you need a good to great board to make it clock well, also you'll need some high quality RAM if you aren't worried about dividers.

I have generic Ultra 1x2GB DDR400 (3-4-4-8 2T) RAM so I wanted to make sure I could get as close to DDR400 as possible.

With the 165 you have two options: 166MHz divider and HTT 244 = 2200MHz w/ DDR400... OR 133MHz divider and HTT 311 = 2800MHz w/ DDR400.

With the 170 you have two options: 166MHz divider and HTT 240 = 2400MHz w/ DDR400... OR 133MHz divider and HTT 300 = 3000MHz w/ DDR400.

I didn't like my odds with 3GHz, but I did like my odds with close to 2800MHz.

For reference, I've dual primed 24 hours stable at: 1800MHz (stock), 2200MHz, 2500MHz, 2600MHz. 2700MHz failed at stock voltage (Core0 within 2 seconds) so I'm at 1.4v right now and I've been dual priming for 12 hours now.

I like the Opteron 165 :) (BTW my board is the $43 nForce4 MSI from Geeks.com, see the hot deal thread for more info)
