FX-55 and Free SLI Motherboard at ZipZoomFly

They want $811.00 for an A64FX @ 2.6GHz

I got my 3800+ for $310.00 and 2 out of 3 of them OC'd to 2.5GHz with a little effort and the third OC'd to 2.4GHz

Considering I have two (dual core) A64s @ 2.5GHz for (nearly) 1/3 the price.... I don't think it's such a great deal.

(but if you are bound and determined to do the FX55, it would be nice to get a free MoBo with it. 😎 )

I don't think that extra 100MHz is really worth $500.00

YMMV

qft = quote for truth

i believe the clawhammer is a skt940 server cpu, an opteron.

now there are skt939 opterons that work very well and o/c well to, but imo the fx line is for people with small a e-penis, are uneducated or have too much $$$. $800+ for a single core cpu is ridiculous when i can o/c my $150 opteron 144 to 2.5GHz on stock V, and 2.7-2.8 if i add a bit of V, and many can hit 2.6GHz with a 3200 venice.... hell i could build an entire computer that would kick as$$ for $800

Thanks all. I should say that I'm looking to put together a gaming machine to replace the Barton 2500+ I have. I'm very interested in the motherboard I mentioned above, but maybe the chip is overkill. Whatever I get, I'm looking to SLI because I would like everything to fly at 1920 x 1200. It seems that SLI is the only way to go to support that resolution? I'm using it now and can't imagine going back to anything less.

I was replacing Barton 2500+ when I did my upgrades as well. (best socket-As I ever had)

I think if you get an A64 or Opteron in the 2.2GHz neighborhood (probably single core is fine for you unless you do Distributed Computing projects 😀 ) you will be very happy with their performance and be VERY happy you have some $$ left over for two decent video cards.

If I was going SLI, I would be giving the 6600GT a big look.
If I were doing a single GPU solution, I would be in the 7800 series. (you're right I didn't even look at ATI (tee hee) )

The only reason to get an FX CPU is if you're getting some kind of extreme phase change cooling and plan to take advantage of the unlocked multi.

I think I've changed my mind 🙂 I'm looking at the Athlon 64 Venice chips now (3500 - 3800)

Well, from what I've seen the FX series have OCed the farthest. While I don't think it's worth it some people might want the absolute fastest CPU they can get. I've personally OCed a 3700+ to 3.05Ghz, 3.0Ghz stable though. Heck, I even got a 3200+ to 2.9Ghz stable, though I got rid of it. It was on water cooling, though.

I'd get an Athlon 64 X2 4800+(which has 2 4000+ cores on it, and FYI, the 4000+ is a renamed FX-53 with locked multipliers, so you get 2 FX-53 cores and if you want, overclock it to 2.6GHZ speeds.) for $630 and spend that extra $180 on that SLI motherboard and you got a better system for the same price. So that SLI mobo is not really "free". They say that it's free so that you think you're getting a better deal than you're getting, but when you look at my recommendation, it's really not. That's Classic business tactics to sell you inferior products(the single core) FX-55 at a jacked up price. The 55 might be faster today, but for tomorrow's games when they come multithreaded, you'll want the dual core processor.

ALOHA

Wow, those are pretty sad speeds for cable...

That's just the package rated speeds and that's a normal basic Cable speed, you sound like you are not familar with basic Cable. I download on average 600K with a 4.9mbps line speed. I have a cable connection that is closer to speeds like T2.

Actually in the USA I have not heard of many people getting better then 512K for a basic cable connection.

The 3.7 megabit that you have listed on your specs is your line speed and mine is faster then yours:

Actually you are the one with the sad speed, next time know what you are talking about before opening mouth. 😉

ALOHA

P.S. I added my line speed, to my specs, sheesh wowie, so all the kiddes will now know, hehe 😉

And if by chance you have a Cable connection that you are able to REALLY download at 3.7mbps then you're not paying $40 and I am and I download at 600K with it.

Sheesh I can't imagine what someone would pay if they could actually get a cable connection and dl at 3.9mpbs, LOL, if there was such a thing it would cost at least $200 a month.

mbps != MegaBytes Per Second.
