FX-55 $240 Newegg

Link

It's tempting just to have what was a $1K+ chip a little bit ago. Those wanting a 939 upgrade...

Got sale from resellerratings.com.

Instead of screwing around with overclock, just drop $325 on an Opteron 185. You get a dual core 2.6GHz chip for less than a bill less than this chip.

Nice price for THIS chip. ZZF has the opty 175 for $230. Dual core 2.2GHZ for a little less. Not trying to thread crap.

Pretty well, as they have an unlocked multiplier, which means less strain on the mobo and more on the CPU....just what phase owners want to hear 🙂

I guess this is a great deal if you cool with liquid nitrogen or phase change devices.

Hmmm, I got my AM2 3500+ for $110 and it is currently running stable at 2.8 GHz on 1.375V. So I'm satisfied 🙂

considering that i jumped on the dual core bandwagon, these chips seem....well....unattractive to me.

What is the bitter taste you have from dual core?

I still have a single core 3700+ because I saw from the reviews that dual cores were not exactly performing any better. Sure there were the people who believed that in the furture, we would see better performance but with computers, I never believe anything until I see it. There have been way too many broken promises to believe anything said nowdays.

I'm going to have to say that the FX-57 is a "better" deal, but any of the new chips will stomp all over it.

Good for 939 people.

I cannot understand why some people go to such great leinghts to preserve their antique motherboards, a new motherboard costs more or less about $50. I know there are some games, mice and keyboards that cost more than that.

If they have socket 939/AM2 and want something faster, their best bet is to ditch it and get a core 2 duo E6600 for $180 and a new motherboard for $50-75. With that you will get a much better price to performance ratio and upgrade path.

Core 2 Duo Motherboard with VIA Chipset DDR1 support

Total Cost is $225 for performance that easily surpases a 2.6GHz Athlon FX-55 and you get to use your old RAM.

Or for just a few dollars more than the processor in the opening post you could have an E6600.

I am currently using a 2.4 GHz socket 475 Pentium 4 on a 400 MHz bus.

That's good info on the $46 MB that can do C2D with DDR/AGP.

But here's my situation.

I have an old PC with Athlon 2200+, 1GB DDR, I just got a 7600 GS AGP. It's adequate for games I have now.

I also got a big screen tv and am thinking of building a C2D PC for the room it's in.

If I do that, I don't think I really need to upgrade my old PC all that much, and for the new PC, it probably makes sense to use AM2/PCI-X/DDR2/etc., doesn't it?

(I already got the DDR2 RAM, $260 for 2GB).
