yes, it was a bad idea. an a64 3400+ is just as fast as the fx-51 and doesnt require registered memory or socket 940.

does 940 work with 939 mobo's?
edit: why did AMD introduce the fx-51 with 940 and then goto 939

because they didnt have 939 then. all they had were socket 754 and 940...and socket A if you count that.

If you got it a year ago, have you been using it? Or has it been collecting dust?

no i got it for my brother; hes been using it yes. his setup is fx-51, 2x512 corsair vs, 9800pro. At the time when i got it, i didn't know much about comps (i still dont, but at least i built my own) its not collecting dust, although his computer is really dusty now lol.

what i meant was, why did they stop using the 940?

940 requires registered RAM. This is more expensive and lower performing than the normal unbuffered ram that is used on s754 and s939.

Edit: However registered ECC ram is used for relibility purposes in workstations ans servers, where s940 has done extremely well. Opteron 200 and 800 series.

could you drop a new 940 Opty in?

hmmm, with a limited spending budget would it be better if i got this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186055 - its a socket 940 mobo with pci-e. id then have to get a pci-e card. id still be using the fx-51.

or should i just get a new cheaper CPU on socket 939, and then get a 7800gt w/ mobo combo deal on newegg.

or i could use the same mobo right now, and use a new 940 opteron, but then it would still be stuck with a sapphire 9800pro.

the modern rebadge of an fx-51 would be a 3700+ san diego,.. just as the 4000+ is the fx-53 rebadge etc etc

the modern rebadge of the fx-51 is technically the 3400+. the 3700+ performs almost exactly the same as the 3400+, aside from 1-3fps increase during gaming.

my results are based on tom's cpu benchmarks, but still, the 3400+ is the modern rebadge of the fx-51.
